March Newsletter
Morro Bay Art Association
From the President's Desk
Springtime is here! If there is one thing I know about March on the Central Coast, it's "In like a Lion, Out like a Lamb."  That certainly describes what's going on at the Art Center this month.  Our From the Arboretum exhibition is a roaring success. Do stop by and find your inspiration in all the gorgeous entries.  Our first field trip event is scheduled for March 10 to the Autry Museum for the nationally renowned Masters of the American West exhibition and sale.  Don't miss it! This isn’t just cowboy art – it’s also California landscapes, portraits, still lifes and any subject that captures the lifestyles of the Western states. The deadline to register is extended to March 4. Jason Mayr begins teaching his new class, “Oil Painting 101”, on Sunday, March 13, for those of you who are ready to branch out or brush up on your skills. Art Van Rhyn is our demo artist on March 14.  A general meeting for all members is March 30.  With so much going on this month and a return to Daylight Savings, we’ll need a little lamb-time to help us catch our breath.  Happy spring!
General Meeting: March 30th at 1PM.
Immediately after Creativity Day.  Topics include new bylaws, scholarships, capital projects, volunteers, movie nights, workshops and more.  Come listen, learn and share.  We want your ideas for making MBAA even better!
From the Gallery

The number of submissions and quality of art for "FROM THE ARBORETUM” exceeded all expectations!  The show is brilliant & a must-see for everyone inside and out of the art community.

Big Thank Yous to -
Bobbye West-Thompson, who brought the idea for the show to MBAA, who rallied artists to participate, to all the artists whose creations make such a beautiful show, and to our hard-working, dedicated volunteers, whose efforts made it all come together:
Ann  Brown, Sharon Westray, Bobbye Thompson, Marty Azevedo, Trudy Calandra, Peggy Stanfill, Park Merrill, Kathleen Van Hyfte, Sylvia Arnold-Hill, Wilma Ramage, Valorie Paladino, Marlene McQueen, Carolyn Moceri!
Every one of you is essential to the show’s success!

Don’t miss our opening reception, March 6, 2 – 4 pm, when the Floral Design Study Group, will display “Art in Bloom”, floral arrangements inspired by paintings in the Arboretum exhibit. Monetary and Merchant awards will be presented by our juror to the selected artists. It promises to be a beautiful and festive event!

Thanks to our Merchant Sponsors who provided awards for several winning entries:
  • Dorn’s Original Breakers Cafe
  • Cass Winery
  • Otter Rock Cafe
  • Stax Wine Bar & Bistro

For our upcoming show:

In the Main Gallery will be ”The Juror’s Show”,  a retrospective exhibit of the work of Art Van Rhyn, renowned Cambrian artist, who served as juror for our current show, “From the Arboretum”.  We are privileged to host this very special event.

In the Russell Gallery (upstairs) will be our next Members’ Show with the theme: “It’s Spring!”.
What comes to mind when you hear the word, “Spring”?  Spring flowers? Spring cleaning? Spring fling? Spring chicken? A spring in your walk?  Let your mind take you where it finds inspiration, and let your next artistic creation “spring” from your imagination!

Exchange date is April 4.

Keeping Up with the Demo Calendar*

On Monday, March 14, Art Van Rhyn will demo his fabulous watercolor techniques.  Art is the juror for the current From the Arboretum exhibit. He is a founding member of the Wednesday Irregulars painters group and an icon in the Cambria arts scene.  Art firmly believes a community gallery must have a place for beginners to show their work. He advises artists to paint what you feel and go outside the lines!

Q: How would you describe the art you do?

A: I’m an impressionist, a plein air person. I just like being outside. Sometimes I like painting very “van Gogh-ish,” and other times I don’t mind getting a little lighter if it works. I’ve never tried to have a style. I just let it go and be what it is.

The February Demo with Penny Fitzgerald was full of great marketing information.  If you aren't up on social media, you're not reaching the biggest art markets.  If you don't have a unique brand to offer, you're not standing out in the crowd!  Penny is a local marketing and branding specialist who owns Art Success Center. If you missed the demo, you can schedule a meeting for marketing advice at (805) 203-3130 or email her at Penny@ArtSuccessCenter.

Mark you calendars now for the April 11th Demo with Page Graeber, Painting Collage.  Page works in watercolor, acrylic and mixed media.  More details about Page's demo in the next newsletter.

*Demos are held on the second Monday of every month, unless otherwise noted.
Next Board Meeting:  March 18 at 1PM, Art Center Morro Bay
