July Newsletter
Morro Bay Art Association
From the President’s Desk
Summer is upon us!  The patio has been duly christened with wine and ice cream, although not at the same time, thankfully. The Chamber of Commerce mixer was a huge success, judging from the comments we received like, "Best ever!"  Our first evening reception was well-attended and the current show is beautiful.

Our second field trip was July 12th and the "Big Rock Bus" was full! We again travelled by luxury motorcoach with Silver Bay Tours. This time we headed to the David Leffel retrospective exhibit at Pepperdine University. Many thanks to Dianne Ravin and Jason Mayr for an excellent job organizing the event.  It was a great trip and a beautiful exhibit!

Have you ever thought about doing an art show?  If you think it's too much work to handle all alone, or if you don't have enough inventory to fill a whole booth, think again!  As a member of MBAA, you can display and sell your pieces at Art in the Park over Labor Day weekend. For this year only, there is no commission and no entry fee for our members. You'll find more information below.
It was a swinging time!

Thank you to all who made the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce Mixer such a huge success!
                          second monday demo
Last month, we learned a great deal about framing our own work from Ron Myers and Mimi Whitney Hafft.  The raffle winner was Marilyn Wadsworth of Los Osos.  Congratulations, Marilyn!

Many thanks to Mimi and Ron for teaching us how to DIY.

Our July demo was provided by Jaqueline Bradley and her work is simply exquisite!  Here she is showing us how to paint on silk.

Jackie gives workshops at Live Oak Music Festival and other venues. Her work has been selected in a variety of Central Coast, State and international juried shows. She is a signature member of the Central Coast Watercolor Society and a board member of the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.  Jackie's pieces are collected nationally and internationally.  Her demo was a big hit with those who attended.

Thank you, Jackie!
                        NEXT MONTH - TWO DEMOS!

August 8th - The Value of Values
Gay Melody Sullivan delivers on the importance of light and shadow. Watch how these elements contribute to the success of a painting when she uses Morro Rock as an example.  Gay believes that finding the correct value over choice of color is the key to capturing atmospheric perspective and 3-dimensional quality in your painting.

August 24 - Special Guest Demo
Krista Harris of Durango, Colorado, will be here to share her methods and philosophy of nature in abstract painting.  Krista is a nationally known artist who gives workshops around the United States.  See below for more good info.

“Lighting the Way”, showcasing the works of our exceptional cast of teachers, Jason Mayer, Kathy Miller, and Diana Manseau is now on view.  It’s another beautiful exhibition, with students, members, and community artists carrying the theme into the Russell Gallery with “Following the Light”.

Thanks to all the volunteers whose efforts made this come together – Sharon Westray, Ann Brown, Hallie Wieser, Jan French, Leslie Parsons, Trudy Calandra, working take-in and tagging; Sylvia Arnold-Hill, Park Merrill, Kathleen Van Hyfte, who hang together; Linda Roletti (who drives all the way up from Studio City to lend a hand); plus Jason, Kathy, & Diana, who hung their own show in the Main Gallery, and our Opening Reception host & hostesses, Jamie Carpenter, Carolyn Moceri, and Armando Nunez.  You all make great things happen!

Next on the calendar, opening August 11, is “Hidden History”, an exhibit created in collaboration with the Morro Bay Historical Society, featuring art by Central Coast artists before 1960.  In our Russell Gallery, we’ll have Central Coast Artists, Post 1960.  Come participate in creating our own art history exhibit of the modern day.

Exchange date is August 9.
Look at all these Happy Campers!

Anyway that was fun and inspirational and can’t wait to see you all again!

Next Board Meeting: July 19 at 1:00pm
2017...
Board positions are available for Vice President, Secretary, Membership, and Education.  Interested persons should contact KC Caldwell at (805) 540-1470 or any sitting board member. Nominating committee is now forming.
Krista Harris, nationally renowned abstract artist from Durango, Colorado, is giving a special demonstration from 3-5 pm on August 24th.
Even if you think you aren't interested in abstract painting, you'll find Krista has much to share that can inform your own creations.  Take a look at http://www.kristaharris.com/
and watch her process on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt9kGn6Bo-o

Krista will be teaching a 3-day workshop at Art Center Morro Bay in March, 2017.
Mark your calendars now.  This event will sell out quickly.

Are you interested in doing an outdoor art event without the big commitment? MBAA now offers a booth dedicated solely to the work of our members. All members are invited to participate in the next Art in the Park on September 3, 4, 5.
We're looking for 2-D, 3-D and 4-D items, including fine art, ceramics, jewelry, photography, woodworking, textiles, sculpture, and more. Work must be for sale at fair market prices. Limited to 3-5 pieces per member, excluding print rack items and cards. Pieces may not be larger than 24"x30".
What is 4-D?  It's your time. Booth work is easy and fun.  It's also great for people-watching and you'll get to meet the other vendors as you give them breaks. Each participant will be assigned to work a single 3-hour shift.  Training takes 10 minutes.
Contact the Art Center to get on the Labor Day list.  If interested participants exceed the available space, acceptance will be drawn by lottery.

 Attention!
