To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice
From the President’s Desk
It’s December, and new members are asking about the Installation & Holiday Dinner at Windows on the Water. Members are encouraged to attend and welcome to bring a guest! This evening, is a great time to get to know each other better and celebrate all of our achievements during this past year!
Art Center Morro Bay is at the heart, of the first Annual Morro Bay Winterfest. During the first four Fridays of December, the gallery will be open until 8pm and 9pm for the Santa Pub & Wine Crawl. The fun begins December 8, at 6pm, on the patio in front of our beautiful new mural, where participants can register to play and compete for prizes. Participants in the Santa Crawl, must wear Santa costumes. A local winery will offer wine tasting inside, and Joan Fee will help visitors design a holiday ornament for $2. each. Joan will offer ornament decorating, using alcohol inks, again on Friday December 15, from 6-8pm, for great family fun.
The 2018 schedule offers plenty of opportunity for exhibitors, workshops and classes. A juried, student exhibit hosted by Art Center Morro Bay, will open March 3, 2018 at the Morro Bay Public Library. Building maintenance is being completed, and a second window is slated for installation sometime this month. A huge thanks to Bob Rodger for installing a new outdoor motion light over the patio, motion lighting in both bathrooms, and holiday lights in the front windows. Marketing and a new mural are cause for notice!
Art Center Morro Bay is a vibrant gallery, run completely by volunteers. Our 2017 board members are also volunteers who have worked very hard to bring about positive change for Morro Bay Art Association. Lynn Douglass, Vice President, managed and staffed the MBAA Art in the Park booth, assisted with the holiday dinner and scheduled a stunning array of classes, workshops and demos for 2018. Bob Azevedo, Treasurer, oversees all financial assets, insurance and risk management functions, including maintenance of the building-MBAA’s largest asset. Janet Hillson, Secretary, produces the monthly newsletter, takes and transcribes our board minutes, and maintains ABC licenses and corporate records. Dianne Ravin, Gallery Director, leads a team of volunteers to develop exhibitions including booking, hanging, jurying and submission functions. Dianne has scheduled an impressive 2018 exhibit calendar. Joan Fee, Docent Director, schedules and trains a team of docents to staff the gallery. Joan created a new reference manual for docent use that will provide future guidance. Juliana Morse, Membership Director, produced member materials such as brochures and forms. Juliana researched database programs to be considered in the future. Liz Moore, Director of Youth Programs, manages a student art exhibit, student field trip, Internship and Scholarship programs. Marty Azevedo, ensures membership data is updated, and Jan French is lending her graphic art experience. Our volunteers and board members sacrifice their time and work hard for us all. Please be sure to thank them for outstanding service and dedication.
I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy, Holiday Season and New Year!

if I could sum up the responses recorded in our guest book for our “Social Justice” show, they would be overwhelmingly appreciative of the quality and the power of the work displayed, thankful for the opportunity for artists to express their views in these tumultuous times, and moved by the thought-provoking images and feelings evoked. Thanks again to all you artists who participated in this heart-felt exhibit!
Our “Annual Winter Faire and Juried Craft Show” opened this month with a beautiful array of fine art and juried crafts. Thanks to all you artists and artisans for your participation, and special thanks to Hallie Weiser for her generous donation of a beautiful quilted holiday table runner for raffle, all proceeds going to MBAA. October Demo Highlights
Woodturning
with Mike Rude
What a great demo at Art Center Morro Bay! Wood turner, Mike Rude, treated us to a demonstration on turning. With wood shavings flying, we had the pleasure of watching as he used a lathe to create beautiful works of art from blocks of wood and tree stumps. One of the pieces he created was a beautiful light yellow challis, which started as a piece of trunk from a neighborhood lemon tree. Mike did a wonderful job of involving attendees, by giving us all a chance to chime in on what he should make out of different pieces of wood. Dale Johnson won one of Mike’s hand-turned bottle stoppers, and Alice Isaac won a mahogany bowl that Mike created during the demo. It was a fun and inspiring afternoon!

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed.....
We feel lucky to have seen it
