Farewell from the President
This is a sad and exciting time for me as I bid you farewell and go back to being a regular ol' MBAA member artist. Serving on the board these past 18 months has been a privilege. Yes, I know that sounds corny... but I can't describe how rewarding and fulfilling the experience has been. There is no better way to learn about yourself and to forge strong relationships than working towards the common good. I highly recommend it.
In December, 2015, when I arrived home after the annual Installation Dinner at Celia's Garden Cafe, I had no idea what lay ahead for us. I didn't have much of a plan but I knew that the potential for a greater association was at our fingertips. Since that time, we've moved mountains (and found a few rabbit holes). That's the beauty of participating in MBAA. There is no harm in trying new things - ever. I encourage you to join the board and get the satisfaction of contributing where it counts.
On June 1st, when I pass the baton to another board member, I know that our association will continue to reach new heights. Our marketing director, Patricia Newton, will serve as Interim President while our 5 new student interns will surely teach us a thing or two about web mastering and Facebook. Look for all sorts of new ideas to flow from the board to the members to the community at large.
But before I bid adieu, I want to use our newsletter to publicly thank each and every one of the directors for being such a wonderful, cohesive team to work with. I also want to thank you, the members, for the energy and talent you bring to the association. The growth we've experienced was made possible by all of us pulling together to create a fantastic Morro Bay Art Association. Let's celebrate us... and keep up the good work!
See you around town.

Seascape Oil Painting Demo
with Patricia Newton May 8 3:00-5:00pm
Have you have ever wondered how to create translucent oil painting with movement and depth? If so, you won't want to miss this demo!
Painting the motion of surf and sea doesn’t need to be complex. Patricia's demo will begin with an overall review of supplies, applications and methods and she will show how to approach a composition using the "golden mean" method. During this demo, Patricia will guide you through painting directional movement of background swells, crashing waves, surface foam and wet sand. Attendees will understand the glazing techniques used for dramatic effect to provide depth and create shimmering light on water.
The David Jonas Retrospective and “Sense of Identity” will be coming to a close on May 1. Both have been extremely well received by our gallery guests and fellow artists. If you haven’t had a chance to see these exhibits, they are definitely worth the visit! Thank you, Susan Jonas, for sharing your late husband’s work with us, and thanks to all participating artists for your contributions!
Exchange Day follows on May 2, 10 am – 2 pm. All artwork in the current exhibits must be cleared on this date, as we make room for the much anticipated, “Homage to the Ranches”, opening May 4. Steve Kellogg, noted Cambrian artist and en plein aire painter, will jury entries for acceptance, and SLO County ranchers, who opened their ranches to artists for this exhibit, will review the artworks for “Ranchers’ Choice” awards. Ribbons will be presented at our opening reception on May 7, when we’ll have the pleasure of meeting the ranch owners, their guests, exhibiting artists and other welcomed guests.
As a special added attraction, Joan Sullivan, artist, historian, and author, will be available for the sale and signing of her book, Rounding Up the Ranches, featuring many of the ranches that will be on exhibit. Joan is the founder of the “Thursday Painters” en plein aire painting group, whose support for this exhibit has been invaluable!

Last month... Playing with Mud
Kristen kept a group of 25 attendees mesmerized at the April demo with her masonite and mud techniques. Half the crowd signed up to be notified of a workshop! Members can expect something exciting to happen in the near future. At the end of her demo, Kristen provided everyone with a board and knife so we could all play in the mud. A big "Thank you!" to Kristen for giving us such a fun afternoon.
Congratulations to our April raffle winner, Judilyn Duba, seen here with her prize - a Kristen Mendenhall original. (It pays to come to demos - Judilyn won a 2017 membership to MBAA last year.)
