Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

December is a month for celebration!  This year, Art Center Morro Bay will have a six foot “crab pot” Christmas tree out front.  Another great way to enjoy the season will be the Santa Crawl.  The trolly will be running and Yule Tide Passports may be obtained on the gallery deck during the event.  http://morrobay.org/events/morro-bay-santa-crawl-/2018-12-07/2018-12-07.  For family fun during this occasion, join Joan Fee and decorate tree ornaments with alcohol inks and enjoy hot spiced cider with cookies!

There is no demo this month.  In it’s place, December 13, 2018, is the Board Installation and Holiday Dinner for all MBAA members.  Meet your 2019 Board of Directors and enjoy a great holiday celebration!  Members are encouraged to attend and may bring a guest.  You’ll get a fabulous dinner at Windows on the Water at a discounted price, enjoy the Morro Bay High School Choir, door prizes, meet fellow artists and a wonderful look back over the 2018 year.  Seating is limited, call the gallery or go online https://artcentermorrobay.org/index.php/shop/to make reservations by December 7th

The next exhibit, For the Birds, concurrent with the Winter Bird Festival, celebrates all birds that live and migrate to the Central Coast.  Exchange day is January 8, 10am -2pm.   January 14, 3-5pm, Finn Hansen will demonstrate leather crafting.  Watch Finn use leather crafting tools to create shapes and designs with beautiful results.

If you’ve thought about joining the board, there’s no better time!  Volunteering provides a great sense of accomplishment and we’re happy to send you an organizational chart with an outline of duties for each position. Contact any board member.

Election results are in!  Your 2019 MBAA Board of Directors will be, Sue Palmer, Community Outreach; Liz Moore, Youth Art Director; Gail Martin, Adult Education Director; Colleen Ray, Membership Director and Michael Costa, Docent Director.  Officers voted in by directors are Bob Azevedo, Treasurer; Janet Hillson, Secretary and Patricia Newton, President.

Board members are volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to run this vibrant gallery and bring about positive change.  During this past year, Sue Palmer assisted with staffing the Art in the Park booth and the Arts in Business program. Gail Martin scheduled an impressive array of classes, workshops and demos going into 2020.  Bob Azevedo, assisted by Debra Piazza, oversees all financial assets, insurance and risk management functions, including maintenance of the building-MBAA’s largest asset.  Janet Hillson, Secretary, produces the monthly newsletter, takes and transcribes our board minutes, maintains ABC event licenses and corporate records.  Liz Moore, Director of Youth Programs, manages a student art exhibit, Internships and Scholarship programs.  I would also like to take this time to give credit to Marty Azevedo who works very hard throughout the year to maintain the membership database.  As President, I fill in the rest and then some!  Our volunteers and board members sacrifice their time and work hard for us all.  Please be sure to thank them for outstanding service and dedication.

In closing, I would like to wish you all, Happy Holidays and a prosperous and healthy, New Year!

JANUARY
FREE Demo

Leather Tooling
with Finn Hansen

January 14, 2019

3:00pm - 5:00pm

Tooling leather is the process of cutting into the leather to create shapes and designs. It’s a lot easier than you'd think, and the results can be beautiful! Tooled leather items often include, purses, belts, saddles, or just about anything made from leather.

A variety of tools are used to achieve different designs. The designs on tooled leather range from the simple to the ornate. Some designs are part of an artistic tradition in many nations. Elaborate stars, flowers, curves, wildlife and initials are a few of the designs you can make, tooling leather.

Tooling leather is a great craft. Whether you’re wanting to make a beautiful horse saddle for yourself or a custom belt for a friend, see how intricate designs are carved into leather.

November Demo

Pine Needle Basketry
with Sherri Smith Holgate

We had 17 people in attendance for the November monthly general meeting and demo.  Topics reviewed at the meeting were the steps being taken by the Morro Bay Art Association to generate interest and promote sales at the gallery as well as the cooperative participation with the city and tourism throughout the holiday season including the Winterfest, Morro Bay12 Days of Fun.

Sherri Smith-Holgate demonstrated how to start a pine needle basket and then how to add various fibers, beads, wire and foil into the coiling. She talked about the different types of needles used in basketry and how to get them ready for coiling.  She shared the art of basketry with the group and showed examples of not only baskets but pendants, brooches, and art pieces as well.

Nancy Schum was the lucky winner of the raffle item, a pine needle holiday ornament donated by Sherri.

Our next monthly general meeting and demo will be on Monday January 14th, 2019 where Finn Hanson will be demonstrating leather tooling.
Left to right is Sherri Smith Holgate and Nancy Schum, the lucky raffle winner!
We will be making table decorations for the annual Holiday Dinner on
