Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

The 2018 MBAA Annual Juried Exhibition, reception and awards ceremony, was a great success.  A huge amount of work goes on behind the scenes of each individual exhibit and this one is no exception.  A special thank-you, to Dianne Ravin for her help organizing and preparing entries for our Juror, Debra Joy Groesser and Jan French, for her graphic design work on the beautiful brochures for this event!  Congratulations are extended to the following award winners, Best of Show for “Ibrahim” by Bodil Bacciarini, First Place for “Point Lobos” by Harwood Benton, Second Place for “Cresting Waves in Gray and Dull Green” by Park Merrill, Third Place for “Ballerinas on My Piano” by Robert Rodger and Honorable Mentions for “Peace and Goodnight” by Debbie Gedayloo, “Cerrito Peak” by Jeff Odell and “Palette and Coffee Pot” by Nico Vandenheuvel.  Event brochures are available at the gallery.  Be sure to get yours before they are gone.  This impressive exhibit will be on display through October 29, 2018.  Exchange day for Winter Faire is October 30, 10am – 2pm.

We all enjoyed the 32nd Annual International Open Exhibition of Pastels USA, by Pastel Society of the West Coast.  The People’s Choice Award, in conjunction with this spectacular event, goes to Homeward Bound by Renay Shaffer.

Mark your calendars.  The Harbor Festival will be along the Embarcadero on Saturday, October 6 and Art Center Morro Bay will be open until 8pm to keep the party going.

Please join us for a hands-on, demonstration of French Dyes on Silk, by landscape artist, Jeanne Miller on Monday, October 8, 2018, 3pm-5pm.  Jeanne uses the Serti (closing or fence) technique which is a method used to outline designs with gutta or water-based resists, applied to white silk that has been pre-washed, dried and stretched.  If you’ve wondered how it’s done or just looking forward to a fun afternoon, don’t miss this free event.

Open Studios is a countywide event presented by Arts Obispo.  Get your catalogs for this free art tour at Art Center Morro Bay.

Creatively Embellished Pine Needle Pendant or Brooch
with Sheri Smith

Monday, November 12
3:00-5:00pm

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a pine needle jewelry workshop by award winning artist, Sheri Smith. Students will learn to create a unique pendant or brooch with creative embellishments.

A passion for creating jewelry and baskets, has taken Sheri on the path of exploring the countless ways a piece can be adorned as it’s being created. Sheri uses traditional pine needle coiling and weaving techniques, and embellishes her works of art with fibers, ribbons, beads, wire and hardware.

Sheri attended University of Oregon EMU Craft Center Continuing Education. She taught youth arts, workshops and Smithsonian Arts through Nature. Sheri is a member of The Pine Needle Group, Columbia Basin Basketry Guild, National Basketry Organization, Art Forum Eugene, Oregon and Willamette Baskets Group. Sheri’s pine needle creations have been featured in numerous publications, and she authored a tutorial for a French magazine, Le Lien Creatif, on pine needle pendants.

This workshop will explore a variety of ways to begin coiling while adding colorful embellishments, using various fibers, beads and wire to complete a unique piece of jewelry. Learn the basics of coiling with longleaf pine needles, colorful waxed linen and beads to create a pendant or a brooch you can wear home! Perfect for beginning to advanced students. These techniques can be later used in making sculptural coiled baskets and jewelry. All materials provided. Students will need to bring a good pair of embroidery scissors.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn techniques from an experienced pine needle coiler and weaver!
$125.00 MBAA Members or $130.00 Non Members

Pre-registration for this workshop can be made at Art Center Morro Bay or online at www.artcentermorrobay.org     Refunds may be given for cancellations made seven days prior to class with the exception of a $30.00 non-refundable registration fee.

September 10 Demo

What’s My Line

Our September monthly meeting and demonstration was a very popular one featuring acclaimed artist Tricia Reichert.  Utilizing the same subject matter, a Scottish bridge, Tricia demonstrated the affects of watercolor with 6 different types of ink.  Each ink, Suni, Walnut, India, Fibre Tipped Pen, Pelican Fountain Pen Ink, & Eternal Ink created a different look under the skilled hands of Tricia Reichert.  Questions were fielded throughout the demonstration and during the break.  Tricia generously provided 2 beautiful ink and watercolor paintings for the raffle which were won by Hedy Hale and Joanne Holzinger.

38 people were in attendance.  Our next general meeting and demonstration will be October 8th, 3-5pm.  Our demonstration will feature Jeanne Miller using French dyes on silk to create beautiful landscapes.

On the left is Tricia Reichert (the instructor) with a picture of her finished demonstration page.
Joanne Holzinger and Hedy Hale were the lucky winners of the raffle!

Inaugural First Responders Crawl

October 26
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Morro Bay Tourism Department is planning a “progressive food and wine event,” called “The Inaugural First Responders Crawl” to honor and thank so-called “first responders” - the men and women who answer the call and run towards danger while everyone else flees.

Advanced tickets are $15 and on sale now online at: www.morrobay.org. A local winemaker or brew master will be pouring libations at participating retail stores, restaurants and business outlets throughout Morro Bay, along with chefs and business owners. Firefighters especially have had a difficult couple of years, from massive landslides and raging forest fires, to flooding and mudslides on top of the regular heavy call volumes they answer, it’s perhaps fitting to treat them to a night out and honor their dedication and sacrifices.

Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Zentangle© with certified instructor, Debbie Gedayloo.  Debbie has practiced the art of Zentangle© for four years stating, “Often when sitting in meditation, I simply can’t quiet my mind and I bounce all over the place in my head. But, when I put the pen to the Zentangle© tile, the outside stimuli fade away and my entire being becomes quiet.” Debbie believes in the healing potential of this method and is excited to teach others how to tap into the hidden wisdom in each of us!

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination. Through guided systematic patterns, students learn to trust their creativity, increase awareness, respond confidently to the unexpected and discover the fun and healing in creative expression.
