May is a very busy month at Art Center Morro Bay!
Gail Martin, Adult Education Director, has been working hard to offer our members great excursions! History buffs, don’t forget about the Excursion to Charrizo Plain and Studio of Jan Cooper, May 5, 9:00am - 5:00pm. Transportation, lunch and art demo are included. Take a short walk or hop aboard a trolley! Artwalk Friday’s begin, May 10, 5-8pm. Visit Art Center Morro Bay, Gallery at Marina Square, Seven Sisters Gallery and Paula Radke Glass! Each participating gallery will be open later, during the second Friday of the month through August, and will offer great food and drink!
Nancy Weber is an accomplished instructor of twenty-two years, designing and creating unique apparel with a large variety of hand-spun fiber. During her demonstration, Monday, May 13, 2019, 3-5pm, she will show you how to use a Hackle or Blending Board to make roving into yarn of unique and difficult to find colors. Nancy will provide a hands-on experience, allowing us to use her spinning wheel!
The upcoming exhibit, Born in the USA, is a non juried event, open to all media and subject matter. Now is a great time to share your creative voice! This show will take place in both galleries. The exchange day is Tuesday, May 14, 10am – 2pm. During this show, the beautiful wood turned pottery of Barry Lundgren will be on display!
We’re celebrating a new paver style patio complimented by a sneak peek of the exhibit, Born in the USA, with a MB Chamber of Commmerce Mixer! Our MBAA Secretary, Janet Hillson, has been working hard on this project. Mark your calendars for a great meet and greet, May 16, 5:30 – 7:30pm. Chamber events help us to meet and work with other MB Chamber member, business owners.
Take-in for the MBAA booth at Art in the Park, is Friday, May 24, 3pm. Art in the Park is May 25, 26 & 27. Take-out will be Sunday, May 27, 3pm. Please try to have your take-in sheets ready ahead of time. You may also pick-up a few wall cards at the docent desk. We will have these at the park if you do not have access to them. Look for the purple tent top! If you wish to exhibit your work during the May event, hurry and let Sue Palmer know, there are only 2 rover positions left open.
A variety of great Summer art classes are awaiting kiddos to enjoy! Check out Mandy Covish’s wonderful classes where youngsters will learn about other countries as they enjoy making art! Also, Katrina Osborn will be teaching kids fun ways of using clay! Both of these talented teachers will provide the perfect summer distraction!
Liz Moore, Children's Art Education Director, will be stepping down this June as her job description in the 2019-2020 school year, will no longer allow her the latitude to attend board meetings. We are deeply grateful for the time she has provided this organization, as a Board Member, volunteer and liaison between MBAA and the local school district. Liz has been instrumental in helping to provide local students an avenue in which they may exhibit their artwork, compete in juried events, process scholarship applications and attend PTA functions to spread children's summer art class awareness. Thank you Liz!
Thank you, for all of your letters to our MB City Council Members! Steve Powers and I continue to work with the Public Works Advisory Board (PWAB) on an additional proposal for the new RTA bus stop at the downtown park.

Our hard working Docent Director, Michael Costa has been doing a fabulous job! Michael works a full time job, attends classes at a local college and donates time to MBAA! We appreciate everything you are doing Michael! Docents donate much of their time and keep our gallery humming! We have immediate openings on the board for Vice President, Gallery Director, Children's Education Director and various assistant positions. Join the Morro Bay Art Association at the 64th annual Art in the Park. This show offers artists and crafts people a high quality outdoor setting to display and sell their wares to an appreciative audience. Stroll the more than 100 artisan booths, hear live music and help support your local art gallery. Morro Bay Art in the Park is looked upon as the finest display of handmade art and crafts presented in San Luis Obispo County.
Sue Palmer is always looking for volunteers to staff the Morro Bay Art Gallery booth and to act as rovers to give artists a short break from their booths. As a volunteer, you may hang and sell your artwork in the Morro Bay Art Association booth at no charge! Please email Sue at slosuepalmer@gmail.com if you are available to work a 4-hour shift.

Field of Light Installation

The Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present a dinner and excursion to the Field of Light Installation by Bruce Munro in Paso Robles at Sensorio.
Internationally acclaimed artist Bruce Munro will premiere his largest artwork to date - an enormous multi-acre walk-through installation. This exhibit will use an array of over 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber-optics, gently illuminating the landscape in subtle blooms morphing color that describe the undulating landscape. Solar-powered, the stunning exhibition will captive visitors, inviting them to engage with the landscape and environment through ethereal light-based and sculptural experience.
Meet at the Art Center for a delicious Italian dinner and good company before boarding our tour bus for the drive up to Paso Robles. Once on site, we will have plenty of time to view the astonishing light installation and other work by Bruce Munro. Read more ...

OPEN STUDIOS ART TOUR
ARTS Obispo’s Open Studios Art Tour is FREE to the public—and one of the largest art tours in the country! Every October, approximately 200 artists participate throughout San Luis Obispo County by opening their studios for visitors to tour. Art in a variety of media and styles—from abstract and representational painting to wood, glass, metal and ceramic—is displayed and sold by artists directly from their working studios. Some artists have live demonstrations so visitors can see art being created and experience the creative process.
Tour visitors plan self-guided routes by looking through the printed full-color catalog, the online catalog or the mobile-friendly map. Meet the Masters is a new and emerging children’s art program
Morro Bay Art Association is proud to present Mandy Covish, Elementary School Teacher for ongoing art classes designed to reach children between Kindergarten and 6th grades.
In the Meet the Masters classes, each session will focus on one of the great art masters. (Dates of featured artist below). Mandy will engage students with short videos and hands on learning. During the first session featuring Pablo Picasso, K-2nd graders will make faces in the style of Picasso including rose period painted circles and blue period collages. Children in third to six grade levels will make Picasso cardboard masks, cubist portraits with newspaper and blue period guitars. Each session will feature a different artist with learning and activities illustrating their artistic style.
Mandy has taught primarily 2nd and 3rd grade levels in the Merced City School District and Clovis Unified School district. With her recent relocation to the Central Coast she is eager to begin teaching on the Central Coast. Mandy taught GATE students (Gifted and Talented Education) for seven years, emphasizing on the arts as a vehicle to promote higher thought processes. She worked as the Reading Intervention Teacher and successfully implemented a fluency and comprehension program through Read Naturally, Soar to Success, Seeing Stars utilizing appropriate leveled books for grades K-6.

Tempura Batik was the topic of our April demonstration. Julie Dunn, well known artist, shared her, unusual and refreshing painting style.
She took us through the steps of the tempura batik process, revealing colorful, energetic results.
Julie gave away a beautiful print to one lucky raffle winner (below).
Our next free demo will be with Nancy Weber. Nancy is bringing a spinning wheel for us to try and will be talking about spinning yarns and weaving.

Watercolor - Wet and Wild

A new watercolor class designed for beginner to advanced students. Classes will be ongoing and feature various instructors.
Adult Coloring and
Zen Doodle Group

Relax and unwind in the adult coloring group! Anyone can do it, no experience necessary! Bring your own coloring books or get started with a page from ours. It's FREE!
Katrina taught art for two years at Templeton Elementary and during the last 12 years has taught art at Morro Bay High School including, design, drawing, painting, and ceramics.
Students will receive an introduction to clay and learn how to make a pinch pot. They will learn the sculpture and texture techniques the will turn their pinch pot into a creative creature of their choosing.

Exposed Coil Designs Bowl or Vase
June 13 and June 14
Students will learn a variety of coil design and building techniques, then will be guided through the process of constructing their own exposed coil pottery piece. (morning students will use a plaster bowl mold to build off of, afternoon class can use a bowl mold or freehand build a vase)

Clay Impressed Textures on Slab
June 18
Students will learn the slab method by rolling out flat sheets of clay with a rolling pin. We will then experiment with creating a multitude of clay textures and images using both natural and man made objects that will be impressed into the clay surface. Students will build a vase, hanging wall pocket, or wall plaque decorated with their choice impressions and textures.

Painting Pots
June 20
Students will learn the basics of color theory and color mixing with paint and basic painting techniques. We will study and review famous artists and styles of painting to inspire our own work completed on a functional terracotta pot! (pots will need to be allowed dry time and sprayed with a protective finish. Ready for pick up by June 27th class) *please wear play clothes as acrylic paint can stain. We will be cautious but accidents can happen.

Intro to Watercolor Techniques
June 25
Students will learn an introduction to watercolor painting and basic techniques and process including wax resist, masking, gradients, wet on wet, wet on dry, and mixed media. Students will be guided through a step by step process of each technique to create their own watercolor painting.
(Morning session will create an Under the Sea theme, Afternoon session will create a Fall Birchwood Scene)

Glazing Pottery
June 27
Students will learn specific tips and techniques for glazing ceramic projects created in the June 11th, 13th, and 18th classes. Blank ceramic pieces will be available for students unable to attend those sessions.

Joan will bring a huge assortment of shells, colored beach glass and glitter to design your scene. Choose a white frame or two metal necklace bezels for your base. After your scene is complete, you will encase it in glistening resin. Cost: $75.00
Succulents - Choose Your Project June 15 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Learn how easy it is to create with succulents. Choose from two sizes of round wreaths or make a Wood Succulent Vertical Garden or an adorable grapevine wreath. Care instructions are provided so your succulent projects thrive for a very long time. Everything's included - Use of tools, beautiful, locally grown succulents, wreath forms or wood vertical planter or grapevine wreath and use of tools - so all you do is sign-up, create and enjoy!
