From the Gallery - Dianne Ravin, Gallery Director
Bidding a fond farewell to the Central Coast Watercolor Society with their annual juried exhibition, “Aquarius 2017”. It was a beautiful show and a real pleasure working with the Aquarius team!
Winner of the People’s Choice Award in our “Striking Oil” exhibit goes to Susan Fishman, with her “At the Museum”. Congratulations, Susan!
Currently on view in the Main Gallery -
A stunningly beautiful Retrospective of the works of the late Central Coast artist, David Jonas opened this week. Whatever your preferred painting medium, subject matter, or style, this exhibit is bound to speak to you with Jonas’ beautiful use of color, composition, and mastery of medium, revealing a truly gifted artist. The exhibit, curated by the artist’s wife, Susan Jonas, will be on view through May 1.
In the Russell Gallery –
We had a fabulous variety of submissions for our open-entry show, “Sense of Identity”. Whether serious or whimsical, representational or abstract, each work provides a deeper insight into the creative minds of our fellow artists. Don’t hesitate to ask for the stories behind the pieces; and if you’re one of the participating artists who hasn’t submitted your Artist’s Statement or your Story, we’re reserving space for you to do so!
Many thanks and much appreciation for our amazing team of gallery volunteers who worked behind the scenes to create two outstanding shows - Colleen Ray, Sharon Westray, Kelly Clark, Jamie Carpenter, Shirley Horacek, Gail Martin, Leslie Parsons, Sylvia Arnold-Hill, Margareta Lund, Carolyn Chambers, Ascension Nelson, Ann Brown, and Linda Roletti.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the paint-outs scheduled through the remaining Thursdays in March and April in preparation for “Homage to the Ranches”, an all-media, juried exhibition, opening May 2. If you don’t have the paint-out schedule, you may pick one up at the gallery or email Joan Suttle firstname.lastname@example.org. Noted Cambrian artist and plein aire painter, Steve Kellogg, will jury entries for acceptance.
Mixed Media Demo
with Ellen Jewett
Ellen demonstrated her process for working with figurative images from magazines. She uses magazine photos which are printed with oil-based inks that can be dissolved and manipulated with various types of artists' mediums to leave interesting effects and patterns. After Ellen sees something that sparks her interest, she works with acrylic paints to develop the image that seems to be coming into focus. Everyone who attended was awed by Ellen's unique process and felt inspired to add their own vision to their experimentation with her process.
Kudos to Ellen who won the Purchase Prize at the awards ceremony for the annual Beacon Show, hosted by the San Luis United Methodist Church earlier this month!
SECOND MONDAY DEMO
