To champion art as essential to life and give our community
a creative voice
From the President’s Desk
The MBAA Board of Directors continue to work hard behind the scenes. This time last year, we were updating the MBAA website in our mission to eventually go paperless. This year, we are improving website security, applying for grants and continue working on a future Plein Air Festival. The 2020, September Art in the Park, will be postponed until next year due to Covid. We're proud that MBAA has been instrumental in the return of its portion of non-refundable deposits to artist vendors during this unprecedented time. Due to the Art in the Park closures, Steve Powers and MBAA have renegotiated a new contract in a concerted effort to address challenges that could impact SPC, MBAA and artist vendors in the future. Good contracts take good judgement, understanding and painstaking work on everyone's part. We're pleased to let you know that a new 5 year contract with an option for the next 4 years has been agreed upon. We look forward to our continued relationship with Steve Powers Company and many future Morro Bay Art in the Park shows!
While we’re still learning to work and live with Covid-19, MBAA is finding ways to offer workshops online or in areas that allow for safe, social distancing. Here's a way to get back to being us! Trowzers Akimbo is teaching Abstraction and Multiple Viewpoint Perspectives, online! You may pre-register for this and other workshops on the MBAA website! Trowzers Akimbo is an interesting guy who teaches realism to abstract. All media is welcome and this workshop is appropriate for all levels. Zoom is free! Download from here, https://zoom.us.
Upcoming workshops include Making a Mosaic in November and world renowned artist and author, Thomas W. Schaller for a watercolor workshop, “Architecture of Light” in March 2021. Pre-register here.
ARTWORK IS SELLING! The next art exchange will again take place on the gallery patio. "Perspectives", explores how perspective lends a three-dimensional feeling to a flat surface. This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media and its theme extends itself to anything that represents a variety of, you guessed it, “perspectives”. This show is open to all artwork. Let’s have fun with this and bring photography and paintings that provide an interesting perspective.
Exchange is set for September 15th, 10am – 2pm on the patio. Please bring pre-printed forms, wire tags, if possible, wear facial coverings and practice social distancing.
Membership renewals may begin for 2021 on September 15th.
We understand that current times may be cause for stress, but let’s continue to be kind to one another as we work toward a common goal.
I would like to personally thank our gracious donors who support MBAA and its mission. Your contributions, small or large, add up to amazing art scholarships that continue to enrich the lives of emerging artists and our community!
Please be sure to thank the volunteers who are generous with their time, help exchange our artwork, hang shows and keep the gallery open for business. Thank you all, for wearing masks at the gallery while we continue to protect each other. Stay safe and healthy!

BOB RODGER
Who is that masked man? It's our superhero, Bob Rodger!
The fundamental core and foundation of the Morro Bay Art Association is the people, dedicated in the support of this wonderful organization, its membership and community it serves. At the heart of this nucleus are volunteers like Bob Rodger.
There is no kinder act than helping others. Volunteers like Bob Rodger, share their time and talents without any compensation.
Bob’s level of dedication is an inspiration for us all! As a lifetime member of MBAA, just a few of his contributions include, preparing the tents and displays for the gallery booth at Art in the Park, acting as a docent and filling in during emergencies, offering a live portrait class and hanging exhibits. Bob has gone above and beyond with his gift of time and expertise. He has picked up the phone in the middle of the night and driven to the gallery to check an alarm event and unclogged and repaired the building roof drainage system during heavy rains. He’s rewired and installed updated sound equipment, researched gallery lighting, repaired or replaced electrical signs and switches, helped ensure annual treasury audits are completed, and most recently, pressure washed and treated the front gate.
One of our greatest assets is people like Bob Rodger. When this association turns to its members for help, Bob continues to be an indispensable part of this organization.
We are grateful for Bob’s countless and selfless acts of kindness, Thank You!
Gallery Director's Report
CALL FOR ARTISTS
The upcoming exhibit, PERSPECTIVES, explores how perspective gives a three-dimensional feeling to a flat surface. Linier perspective creates the illusion of distance to a vanishing point. It’s a system of representing the way objects appear to get smaller and closer together, the farther away they are from the viewer. We see parallel lines as converging in the distance, although in reality they really don’t. Roads and railway lines are obvious examples. Multiple vanishing points such as a cityscapes, enable a more naturalistic representation.
Atmospheric or aerial perspective, creates the sense of distance by simulating changes affected by color such as blue in a mountain as it meets the sky.
This exhibit celebrates artistic expression in all media, styles and subject matter.
We could use a few large pieces for this show! Let's finish out the summer by filling the gallery with great artwork.

ZOOM WORKSHOP
Abstraction and Multiple Viewpoint Perspective with Trowers Akimbo
Learn from this amazing artist right from your home. Stay connected with other artists and have fun in this Zoom workshop.
In organic art, with its floating structure orbiting a nodal point, one invites multiple perspectives, existing in a similarly fluid temporal reality, which are assembled by the viewer to create a single composite image. Our gaze wanders through the picture, turning this way and that, zooming in, panning out, the image held together by its own internal design. We will be playing with tension between 2-D pattern and 3-D depth. We see it in the works of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
The workshop goal is to introduce and explore the fascination of Multiple Viewpoint Perspective and for each attendee to go home with an abstract painting of their own design. Learn more ...
ZOOM INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE EMAILED TO YOU PRIOR TO WORKSHOP COST: $400. MBAA Members $425. Non-Members*
