From the President’s Desk

Coming up!  The MBAA Annual Juried Art Exhibit.  We’re fortunate to have Dennis Curry, as juror for this event.  Dennis served in the United States Army, 25th Infantry Division’s Combat Artists program in1966, where he documented combat experiences from an artist’s perspective.  Upon his return to the U.S., he learned original printmaking, and founded Blue Berry Press, located in Cambria, CA.  Dennis developed his love of nature through travels of East Africa and significantly contributed to conservation work around the world.  Dennis is a current member of Society of Animal Artists, Artists for Conservation and San Luis Outdoor Painters for the Environment. Two settees have been added to the upstairs for your comfort and event booklets will be available following the awards ceremony. The reception and award ceremony take place, Sunday, September 22, 2-4pm.

Thanks go to Dianne Ravin for her help organizing all of the entries for our juror and Jan French for designing the event booklets!  A special thanks to Ellen November, for helping us with marketing since 2017!

Mark your calendars for A free demonstration of Zentangle, September 9, 3-5pm.  Zentangle© is non-representational and unplanned so you can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result.  If you’re looking for a calming artwork that anybody can do, don't miss this free event with certified Zentangle© instructor, Debbie Gedayloo.

We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful gallery to exhibit and sell artwork with minimum commission and take-in fees.  Art Center Morro Bay and its programs are completely managed by volunteers.  Please help us support and maintain this wonderful organization by volunteering a little of your time.  Also, please consider a one-year commitment as a board member.  Nominations for board positions will be taking place soon.  You may also be a guest during an upcoming board meeting to help you decide if board work is for you.  The experience is rewarding!  If you’re ready to throw your hat into the ring, please let me know. Positions include: Adult Education Director, Co-Gallery Directors, President, Vice President, Treasury Assistant and Marketing.  Job descriptions may be requested for any of these positions.

Marketing Assistant:  Work from home during a timeframe that best suits you.  Work involves uploading information into websites from text and images that are provided.  Work approximately 2 hours per month.

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination. Through guided systematic patterns, students learn to trust their creativity, increase awareness, respond confidently to the unexpected and discover the fun and healing in creative expression.

Incorporating a practice of Zentangle© allows for increased neuroplasticity and youthfulness in the brain. Anyone can feel successful and confident with the practice. If you can write the letters: I, C, S, O…you can follow the patterns. The underlying theories and systematic approach in the Zentangle Method© allow the participants to quiet the mind and focus, one stroke at a time.  Learn more ...

Field of Light at Sensorio

On August 15, a fun group of 20 people gathered at the Art Center for a wonderful dinner procured and produced by Gail and John Martin.  A veritable feast of salad, bread, chicken, lasagna and green beans, along with Central Coast wine, was served by John and Gail to an excited and receptive audience. The group then climbed into our private bus for the enjoyable ride up to Paso Robles to experience Bruce Munro's Field of Light exhibition.

Leisurely walking the grounds as the sun slowly descended, one could feel and see the change in light from day to dusk to night as the 58,000 solar powered lights slowly showed their colors.  It was a truly magical experience combining nature and light and creativity.  Making this excursion even more spectacular was the sight of the full Sturgeon Moon rising orange and enormous out of the Field of Light.

To volunteer your time and talent!!  As much or as little as you can spare - we are grateful for any amount of time you can dedicate.   As a member driven, all volunteer organization, it takes YOU, our members, to keep the doors to the gallery open to locals and visitors.

If you have some accounting experience, we need a Treasuerer; our Business Art Program could use a computer-literate organized assistant; and we are always in need of friendly docents to maintain the front desk.  Please contact Docent Director Michael Costa at mjcosta67@aol.com or call the gallery at 805-772-2504.

AUGUST DEMO

Wool Felting
with Debbie Gedayloo

August Demo was all about felting.  Debbie Gadayloo explained the different types of felting, wet felting and dry felting and when to use them.  She showed us different yarn types and how to incorporate them into the project.  She had examples of felted vessels, fiber felted 2D landscapes, and 3D sculpture.  After a brief explanation on how to needle felt, all in attendance made an adorable felted bee.

Annette Sheely won the raffle prize, a felted miniature landscape, framed and ready to hang.
