SEPTEMBER 2022 NEWSLETTER

   From the President’s Desk

2022 has been a year of many transitions, all of which I’m pleased to report, are positive and helping to move the Morro Bay Art Association into new and exciting trends. Upcoming projects slated, begin with re-roofing Art Center Morro Bay. This may not be an exciting project but will help ensure the gallery remains in good condition for years to come. Janet Hillson has applied locally for grants that we hope will finance this work.

Other long wished for projects include the removal of carpet from the gallery walls, replacing it with new drywall, painting with a light gray color, adding baseboards and a much more modern and clean, art hanging system.  This improvement would update the gallery and hopefully provide more ease of hanging exhibits. Next, replacing the classroom flooring with a polished concrete. These projects will require financial support and good old fashioned elbow grease. If you wish to help, please join us during the various fundraisers or volunteer your time to get this project done within a short window of opportunity.

These projects would require a short gallery closure from approximately January 2, 2023 through January 16, 2023. We’ll keep you informed.

I’m also pleased to announce that continued work with the City of Morro Bay and Public Works Department with regard to the RTA bus stop on Harbor Blvd. will be moving forward soon after the Labor Day, Art in the Park. That plan includes refurbishing and relocating the sofa seating, which has been a huge part of the artwork within the bus stop shelter. As this project moves forward, the plan is to replace the shelter and canvas artists to help add a new and updated artwork element. We’ll forward a Call to Artists for this project.

All of these projects are due to the continued support of our very hard working MBAA Board of Directors, devoted volunteers and members.

Patricia Newton

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Dying Silk Scarves

with Sharon Gellerman
October 9  1:00 - 4:00pm

Sharon Gellerman is a local artist who creates one-of-a-kind, hand-marbled, silk scarves and silk tallits. Sharon has a fresh and modern interpretation of the classical art of marbling on fabric. Through experimentation with color, technique and dye, she has refined her style and designs.

Marbled silk scarves are made by layering colorful dyes onto a solution of water and cellulose. This process allows the dyes to float above the liquid. Using custom made combs or rakes, the layers of color are then manipulated into unique designs. When the fabric is placed on top of the composition and absorbs the dye colors, it transfers onto the silk scarf, creating the marbling affect.

If you’ve ever wanted to make your own hand-dyed silk scarfs or just want to see how it’s done, this is the workshop for you. Students will get to take home one finished scarf and 2 or 3 handkerchiefs.

with Warren Chang
January 14-15, 2023   9:30am - 4:30pm

Students will be able to get feedback directly from Warren, ask questions in an intimate class setting, and follow along with demos. This workshop will cover how to construct a human head and learn how light falls on form with regard to value and edge relationships. In addition, Warren will share his unique limited palette in applying color in the Old Masters style. Students will focus on drawing the human head and creating life-like skin tone colors.

Warren will give a slide presentation revealing his process of creating his unique narrative paintings. By the end of this 2-day workshop, each participant will have a final painting inspired by Warren’s unique approach to painting that gives a window into his practice.  Learn more here ...

ORNAMENT FUNDRAISER

You've asked for many years, and now we're doing it!  It's really happening!  We are upgrading the galleries at Art Center Morro Bay by removing the carpet from the gallery walls, adding sheetrock, painting the new walls with a light gray color, adding baseboards and a modern hanging system!

Here’s how you can have fun and help!

Pick up 3 to 6 ornaments (please take a variety) from the gallery docent desk.  Take them home to paint and decorate. It would be lots of fun to see artists paint a tiny scene or incorporate a personal style of artwork onto the ornaments. The best paint to use on bisque (clay style) ornaments is acrylic. You can use colored markers, glitter, beads and other bobbles to decorate.  Don’t forget to sign your tiny work of art!

Then, return your newly painted/decorated ornaments to the docent desk when finished. A sealer will be added to completed ornaments and prepared to hang on the gallery Christmas trees. The gallery will sell these tiny works of art for $15.00 each.

Customers will be looking for great little works of art to hang on their tree or give as gifts and you’ll help finance the new building upgrade.

Meet Angie Young
Social Media Manager and Docent

"I am a California native that relocated to Morro Bay in 2021.  Because I work from home (long before it was popular), I was looking for a way to meet people and give back to the community. Art Center Morro Bay is the perfect fit with my years of experience as a social media manager and my Master of Arts degree in English from CSUN. For most people, grammar isn’t very interesting, but for me it is my jam. I love the Oxford comma and a good grammar conundrum. A common theme for me is that I enjoy working  behind the scene and helping others put their best foot forward. Hence I run my own consulting business as an editor and book designer called Young Waters Studio, as well as, a second business called Bad Latitude Bags where I upcycle sailboat sails into beach totes as my creative outlet. When I am not working, you’ll find me hiking, cooking, or spending time with my family: Dale and Joe the Dog, who can be found on Instagram @everybodylovesjoethedog."

Nick name: hawk eye
Favorite beverage: coffee
Proudest moment:  Even though nobody likes a quitter, I quit smoking two years ago.
Aspirations: Hike the Appalachian Trail and travel to Tibet.

Silk Dying
with Sharon Gellerman

Monday September 12
3:00-5:00pm

Sharon Gellerman creates hand-marbled designs on silk and other natural fibers using a process (marbling) that originated many centuries ago. She says, "No two designs are alike simply because of the unpredictable nature of the interaction between the dyes and the marbling process itself." Sharon finds the challenge of working with that unpredictability both intriguing and inspiring. Using the blank piece of fabric as a canvas, she creates each silk scarf design as a one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art.

Please join us for a unique and wonderful free demo with Sharon Gellerman on Sept. 12 @ 3:00-5:00pm
