Art Center Morro Bay

To champion art as essential to life and give our community
a creative voice

From the President’s Desk

Happy 2019!  The annual Installation and Holiday Dinner at Windows on the Water, began with Morro Bay High School Choir singing carols.  There were a ton of gift certificates provided by local businesses given out as door prizes and the evening ended with a slide show.  It was a beautiful and festive way to get into the holiday spirit and meet 2019 MBAA Board of Directors. Best of all, the food was fabulous!

In retrospect, updates to the building include a second upstairs window, responsible, general maintenance, such as termite control and the building was repaired and painted, outside.  The MBAA Bylaws went through a painstaking update. Summer Art Walks and Pub crawls designed to introduce the public to Art Center Morro Bay brought lots of people through the gallery and sales continue to do well.  Jewelry artists have filled the cases with wonderful pieces for all tastes.  It was another great year for Art in the Park and internships with Cal Poly student, Victoria Duehring and Morro Bay High students.

Heading into the New Year, Gail Martin has worked tirelessly on an exciting lineup of demos, classes, workshops and art related excursions. “Meet the Masters” is a new and emerging, children’s art program scheduled to begin in March.  In May, enjoy a fun filled and interesting excursion to the Pictographs found on the Carrizo Plain, Painted Rock and a visit to the art studio of Jan Cooper where lunch will be served.  Gail has also been working on a great list of gallery videos you will find on U-Tube!  Below, Gail will introduce you to the great demo lineup for 2019! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s90sPAjSIVE

Be sure to reserve a space in one or more of these fun and educational activities at the gallery or online: https://artcentermorrobay.org/index.php/shop/

The next exhibit, For the Birds, concurrent with the Winter Bird Festival, celebrates all birds that live and migrate to the Central Coast. This exhibit is open to all 2D artists. During this exhibit, Art Center Morro Bay will feature 3D artist, George Jercich.  George’s glass sculptures celebrate birds and the Central Coast.  Exchange day is January 8, 10am -2pm and the reception is Sunday, January 13, 2-4pm.  On January 14, 3-5pm, Finn Hansen will demonstrate leather crafting.  Watch Finn use leather crafting tools to create shapes and designs with beautiful results.  Gail will stream details of demos that may be difficult to see to the big screen TV for better viewing.

If you’ve thought about joining the board, there’s no better time! Serving as a board member provides a great sense of accomplishment and we’re happy to send you an organizational chart with the outline of duties for  each position.  Contact any board member.

Annual Holiday Dinner

Approximately 75 people attended the 2018 Holiday and Board Installation Dinner at Windows on the Water.  The evening began with Holly Banfield directing the Morro Bay High School Choir.  A ton of gift certificates donated by local businesses were collected by board members and given away as door prizes.  Members were treated to a U-Tube video created by Gail Martin and a slide show brought to you by Pat Newton and Jan French.  The dessert, a delicious cheesecake with berry swirl, was donated by Morro Bay Art Association.  The evening was topped off by a fabulous dinner by Chef Paul Merkle and the always outstanding staff of Windows on the Water Restaurant.

FEBRUARY

FREE Demo

Watercolor, Fix It or Forget It
with Kathy Miller

February 11, 3:00pm - 5:00pm

We always have a glowing ideal of what our work should look like. Enthusiasm reigns as we begin to paint. But what happens if our artistic process goes awry and our original concept is lost? Kathy will help us analyze problem areas and offer different solutions. She says “There are multiple ways to address any problem.” She will demonstrate salvage techniques utilizing things like gesso, crayons, or ink which may be a little out of our comfort zone. Don’t toss out an unfinished or disappointing painting. Turn it into something you can be proud of. Kathy Miller will show you how.

2018 Annual Santa Crawl

The second annual Santa Crawl was a success!  Teri Bayus weathered the cold evening air on the Art Center deck, handing out passports to participants.  Debra Piazza and Ron Rehfeld poured wine donated by Baileyana Winery, Joan Fee taught lots of people how to make Christmas ornaments using alcohol inks, Ellen Lodge helped set up snacks, while Charmaine Henderson and Pat Newton were on hand to mark off passports and help participants find their way around the gallery.  A huge thanks to all who supported this event.  Many people were in the gallery for the first time with plans to return at a later date.

The Zentangle Method© of mindful creation is a way to relax, focus and expand one’s imagination.
