Upcoming WiO Events

Kick off the Industrial Affiliates workshop next week by joining us for a Brown Bag Lunch! On Monday, February 25th from 12:00 - 1:00pm, Dr. Kyle Myers from the SPIE Board of Directors and Director of Imaging, Diagnostics, and Software Reliability at the Food and Drug Administration will share how optics can lead to a career with the FDA.  Come to the Gender and Women's Studies Building Room 100 (on Tyndall Ave. near University Blvd) for some coffee and cookies!
Abstract: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates a broad spectrum of products that accounts for approximately 20-25 cents for every U.S. GDP dollar. When most people hear ‘FDA’ they think of a government agency devoted to the evaluation of new drug applications as well as ensuring that our food supply is safe. Less well known is the role of FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), which receives over 22,000 premarket applications for new medical devices every year. I’ll talk about the unique role of the CDRH lab program for facilitating medical device innovation. Working at the nexus between device innovators and patients, our scientists focus on the development of tools (computational modeling software and imaging phantoms, for example) that support decision-making regarding device safety and effectiveness, speeding access to technologies of public health importance for U.S. patients.

Outreach at the Tucson Festival of Books

During the Tucson Festival of Books this year, OSC will be part of Science City! We will be doing some building tours and set up some outreach demos in the 3rd Floor lobby.  If you haven't been before, it's a really fun event to share optics with a huge crowd that comes to campus for the Festival.  The more hands the better, so if you can come by to help (even if it's just for a short amount of time!) please EMAIL Kali Gagne at kaligagne@email.arizona.edu.

This year, we are also celebrating the launch of the Graduate Women in STEM Student Council (WiSSC), so we are partnering with the Science and Engineering Excellence Banquet hosted by Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) the night before the Launching Your Career Symposium.  The banquet will start with a networking hour and student poster session; reserve your seat for the banquet here and submit a poster abstract here.
