Illinois Trial Team
 September 2016 Edition

In September, the Illinois Trial Team had yet another successful start to its season. Our first invitational tournament will be at WashU this year on October 15-16. We are very excited to see our new talent in action as we prepare for the season.

A Message from the President:

"Looking forward to this upcoming season I feel nothing but excitement about the prospects that we have. Right now, our new members are in full swing learning the “language” that is mock trial, while our returning members are gaining valuable experience as leaders and mentors. As we learn more and more about this case, we prepare to look forward at our future tournaments. Our lineup of tournaments is strong this year, with the competition more fierce than in years past. We have a strong roster to attend these tournaments as well, with an older and more experienced team. However, now is not the time for the Illinois Trial Team to grow complacent, not that they ever would, and I look forward to watching everyone work hard, learn a lot, (and most importantly) have fun this year!"

Meet the Coaches

Katy Karayannis

"My name is Katy Karayannis, and I am very excited to be the head coach of the Illinois Trial Team this year! I have been doing mock trial for about 10 years total - I started competing during my freshman year of high school and continued through the end of my undergraduate year.  In addition to being involved with the Illinois Trial Team, I am the Coordinator for the Illinois State Bar Association High School Mock Trial Invitational. Being involved in mock trial is very important to me because I feel like mock trial has had a large impact on my life and my future career and I am very happy that I am able to give back in some way! I am looking forward to another great season with a wonderful group of kids."

Kathryn Campbell

“My name is Kathryn (Katie) Campbell, and I am very excited to be back coaching the Illinois Trial Team this year. I started competing in mock trial during my Sophomore year of high school. I then competed on scholarship at Illinois State University, where I was captain of my team for three years and competed at nationals. I am passionate about mock trial because I love the strategy and gamesmanship of coming up with a case theory. I also love witness portrayal, which is something unique to college mock trial. I am looking forward to a wonderful season!”

Matthew Goldman

“My name is Matthew Goldman, and I’m very excited to coach the Illinois Trial Team. I started doing mock trial in my sophomore year at Michigan State University, and it was one of the major experiences during undergrad that drove me to go to law school. I was lucky enough to be able to be on the 1L trial team through Phi Alpha Delta, and join the upper-level trial team in my 2L year. I also served as head coach for the Phi Alpha Delta team during my 2L year. When I was at Michigan State, Illinois was one of the select few teams which were considered regularly excellent. I am absolutely thrilled to join an organization with such a strong reputation and tradition of strength.”

Gabriela Zamfir

"My name is Gabriela Zamfir,
and I am one of the law student coaches for the Illinois Trial Team. I wanted to go to law school for
as long as I can remember, but I didn’t join the Mock World until
my 1L year. (I don’t even think my undergrad had a team!) I learned so much during my time on the 1L team; it was easily the best experience of my first year of law school, but I opted to go the clinic route for my 2L year instead of joining the upper-level trial team. When the current Trial Team coaches heard that, they suggested that I join their coaching staff
to stay involved in mock trial, and I jumped
at the chance. So far it has been an amazing
experience. I like to think I can relate the best to how overwhelming it can be to learn so much new information all at once since I went through it last year. I’m doing what I can to make it a great experience for our team, and I hope they
all take as much from the experience as I did!"

Michael Fricke

"My name is Michael Fricke, and I teach business law in the College of Business here at the U of I. I am a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, and prior to joining the faculty here, I practiced law for six and a half years. Commercial litigation was a significant part of my legal practice, and I look forward to sharing my experience with the Illinois Trial Team members as a faculty coach! I love working with students and helping them explore their future options, and I think mock trial is a fantastic resource for students considering the legal profession to get a taste for what lawyers do."
