Interview with Telefonica About SDN and NFV Deployment
Leading up to next month's NGON & DCI World Conference in Nice, France, lead analyst Scott Wilkinson moderated a talk with Telefonica's Juan Pedro Fernandez on "Disaggregation Strategies and Transport SDN."
Replay Image
The conversation provided useful and refreshing insight into a service provider’s real-world deployment as Fernandez shared what is driving Telefonica to deploy a disaggregated network, how it is being implemented, and the company’s future steps.
Both Scott and Andrew Schmitt will present and moderate panels at NGON this year. Contact us if you want to connect with them in Nice.
Cloud Spending Exceeds $1 Billion
Cloud operators remain the fastest growing optical customer segment, increasing nearly 50 percent year-over-year and spending more than $1 billion in 2018, according to Cignal AI's 4Q18 Optical Customer Markets Report.
Custom Markets Data Graph
The report quantifies optical equipment sales to five key customer markets: incumbent, cloud and colo, wholesale, cable MSO, and enterprise and government, and offers forecasts. Key findings include:
  • Ciena extends market lead among cloud operators – Ciena supplied over a third of the global market and doubled its lead over its nearest competitor. Others in the top five include Cisco, Huawei, Nokia and Infinera.
  • Incumbent spending growth will remain in low single digits through 2023 – While incumbents still purchase most optical hardware, their spending is static when compared with new network operators. Updated forecasts indicate a decline ahead in North American incumbent spending.
  • Cable/MSO and wholesale operators decelerate spending – Spending growth by cable/MSO operators was weak and market consolidation resulted in slowing wholesale optical network deployments.

OIF Standards Accelerate Tunable Laser Deployment
OIF LogoAndrew Schmitt wrote an article for the OIF detailing how standardization initiatives resulted in the rapid adoption and usage of tunable lasers. The piece is published on the OIF website and outlines the transition from multiple proprietary solutions to a nearly universally used standard.

OIF members worked together to complete two multisource agreements (MSAs), which standardized the mechanical packaging of the tunable laser component and the software interface for laser control and management. The MSAs marked a turning point for lower tunable laser costs and higher sales.
