Monday, April 22nd is Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated in America on this date in 1970 and is credited with raising awareness of environmental issues globally. Today, over 1 billion people in 196 countries observe Earth Day each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

Being good stewards of God’s creation is also a social principle of the United Methodist Church, which in part states, “All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, minerals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are God’s creation and not solely because they are useful to human beings.”

Earth Day serves as a good reminder that we need to be environmentally responsible all year long.

Please keep the following people in your prayers . . .

Ann Giarratano (comfort and peace at Anthony's passing); Rudy Iannacone (continued healing and health); Guy Raymond (continued good results from implant surgery to relieve back pain); Betty Barrentine (good health); Jim Armstrong; Paul Bartek; Barbara (Dottie’s sister, breast cancer); Jim West; Jerry Shafran (Peg & Wayne's son's father in-law - aggressive bladder cancer); Eileen Schuck (friend of Peg & Wayne - aggressive bladder cancer); Andrew (former student of Donna -  bed ridden with bartonella and is battling depression); Jackie Zimmerman (Joy’s friend – rare blood disease); Cousin & Wife of Mike Palmer (in serious car accident – prayers for healing); Tonya Porteous (daughter of Guy & Christine - has a growth on her thyroid, which is pushing on esophagus – evaluation and treatment pending); Elizabeth Samu (friend of Donna - Hodgkin’s lymphoma & cerebral palsy - prayers for healing); Ruth Kyle (Deb & Ed's Aunt - recovering from a broken ankle); Travis (Stephanie Gebel’s son – in hospital); Family of John (extended family member of Dottie -  at his passing); Fernedez Family (At Cathy’s passing – Christine’s Aunt); Dave (Paul German’s brother, back in hospital, prayers for healing); Nancy (Donna’s friend – in ICU needing a miracle); Family of Michael Seymond (at the passing of Michael); Family of three area children at the loss of their mother; Kerry Walsh's Mother (Co-worker of Linda -   comfort during last days); Jill Materia (Linda’s friend - 21-year-old with lymphoma); Chris Bitondo (having intestinal issues, which they hope to manage with a new medicine.  If the medicine does not work, surgery may be required - prayers that the medicine is effective); PTL – Erin (Martha’s granddaughter doing well after heart surgery); Marilyn’s two sons (traveling mercies for the coming week); Jill’s son’s nephew (1-year-old having seizures)

Please help us keep this prayer list up-to-date.

The Easter Cantata was presented during the Palm Sunday worship service.  Kudos to Grayce and all the participants for a very inspiring worship service.  Anyone interested in participated in the DeBows music ministry, vocal or instrumental, can email Grayce at music@debowsumc.org.  The choir rehearses at 10:45 each Sunday morning.  The band practices on Friday nights at 6:00 PM.  Be sure to join us on Sunday, April 28, for our monthly Revival Service.  There is always plenty of great music presented during these services.

Community Hymn Sing

America's Keswick, in Whiting, hosts a monthly community hymn sing.  On Thursday, June 6 the theme will be "Songs of Bill & Gloria Gaither".  The event costs $12 per person and includes a continental breakfast at 9:00 AM. The program starts at 10:00 AM followed by a delicious lunch at 12 noon.

Spend the day in worship! Join in singing classic hymns, listen to a great message, and hear first-hand testimony about how God is working in the lives of those in our Addiction Recovery Ministries.
If anyone wishes to go from DeBows, please let Anita Chichester know by May 1.  These events sell out quickly, so contact Anita as soon as possible.  Due to the popularity and planning nessesary for this event, payment must be paid in advance and is non-refundable.

Wednesday Bible Study

The Wednesday Bible Study meets every Wednesday from 11:30am - 1:00pm.  The Sanctuary is open prior to the study at 11:15am for optional prayer time. The study group is on Easter break and will resume on May 1.  More details about the bible study can be found on the church website.

Trustee News
The paving of the church driveway & parking lot is complete.  Also, the front doors have been replaced and are ready to paint.  This will be scheduled in the near future.  Thanks to all the Trustees that have done the necessary due diligence and planning to facilitate these projects.

"Open Doors" Fundraiser

We are circulating among our congregation jars labeled “Open Doors” on top.  We ask everyone who takes a jar to fill it with spare change they accumulate between now and the end of the month.  The jars will be collected on Sunday, April 28.  This will help fund the replacement of the front doors of our church.  If you have not already taken a jar, they are on the table outside of Fellowship Hall.  Please take one and keep it on your kitchen counter or someplace where everyone in the family can add to it.  "Thank You" for helping to make our church more accessible and secure.

Scrip Gift Cards
Another bulk order for the Scrip Gift Cards will be placed on Sunday, May 19.  Gift card information and order forms can be found on the table outside of Fellowship Hall.  Contact Sue Hayward for additional information.
Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Karen Stillwell to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.
