Hospital Germans Trias first in Europe to implant a new Device to treat heart failure
The team of Dr Antoni Bayés of the Heart Disease Research Group at the IGTP and the Cardiac Service at the hospital is taking part in a world-wide trial to confirm the efficacy of a new therapy to relieve the symptoms of severe heart failure and reduce the admissions of these patients to hospital. 10-20% of patients fail to respond to medication to reduce the pressure within the heart caused by a build-up of blood that the heart is unable to pump out of the left auricle. The new device connects the two auricles of the heart and reduces the pressure by allowing a carefully controlled level of blood to pass to the right hand side. The device is implanted in a minimally invasive operation using a catheter and the patient is able to leave hospital the following day.
