Hello, Friends...

Is anyone here shy?

For several years, that is what I’ve asked children at the start of my school and library visits. A few hands might go up, nervously. A few other children look unsure.

Really? Hardly any of you are ever shy? What about when you go to a new place, or start a new school year, or meet new people? Who is shy sometimes?

More hands go slowly up. Sometimes a lot of hands go up.

Is anyone here too shy to raise their hand?

And then this amazing thing happens. At least half of the hands are up. Sometimes, almost all of the children raise their hands. And by now, they are looking around at each other, and children who thought they were alone in this feeling of shyness learn that they are not.

I was really shy when I was your age. I still am, sometimes, I tell them.
And with everyone now connected by shyness, the ice is broken, our space is safe, and the school visit can begin in earnest. We can have fun digging into the how and why I make books for children, and beginning on September 27, we will read my newest book together. And together we will find out...

Who is shy?
And who do you think is Shy? Visit whoisshy.com and take a guess!
