High performance lighting can help to keep retail parking lots full during the holiday season.

As the holiday season approaches, normally underused parking lots will be packed to the brim. Holiday shopping accounts for more than 19% of annual retail sales. As communities and retail parks prepare for the holiday rush, many are issuing reminders to shoppers about how to stay safe during the shopping frenzy. One of the most common themes throughout these warnings is the importance of parking in well-lit parking lots.

While there has yet to be a proven causality link between lighting and crime rates in parking lots, there is a definite relationship between how safe shoppers feel and lighting. Beyond making make shoppers feel more safe during their shopping excursions, brightly lit shopping centers and parking lots are also more likely to attract customers in the first place. Numerous studies have been done to link proper retail lighting with consumer behavior and increasing sales.

High performance lighting can also play a pivotal role in helping shoppers navigate congested parking lots. This is especially important during Black Friday rushes, when many shoppers are beginning their seasonal shopping during pre-dawn hours. Properly lit parking lots can help drivers more clearly see obstacles in crowded parking lanes as well as find open parking spaces.

In regions where snow and inclement weather is a factor, proper lighting can assist in parking lot maintenance. For example, the Fairmont Mall in Syracuse, NY saved $7,500 in annual snow removal costs by upgrading their parking lot lighting. The the speed of snow removal was improved by better visibility, thereby reducing costs.
