DC Charter Families Hosted 7 Events with Councilmembers in Honor of National School Choice Week

National School Choice Week (NSCW) is an annual, week-long event that spotlights the quality options available to meet the needs of every child - public traditional, public charter, magnet, private, parochial.

In honor of NSCW 2016, 45 DC charter families from 16 charter LEA's - AppleTree, Center City, DC Prep, DC International, Democracy Prep, Eagle Academy, EL Haynes, Elsie Whitlow Stokes, Friendship, Ingenuity Prep, Inspired Teaching, KIPP DC, Maya Angelou, Mundo Verde, Thurgood Marshall, and Washington Latin - shared their personal and powerful stories of choice with Councilmembers Brianne Nadeau (Ward 1), Brandon Todd (Ward 4), Kenyan McDuffie (Ward 5), Charles Allen (Ward 6), Yvette Alexander (Ward 7), LaRuby May (Ward 8), and David Grosso (At-Large and Committee on Education Chairman).

"What do I like about her school? What do I not like?! It’s been a long time since I’ve been in school and I’m able to get the help I need to help her with her homework at game nights, math nights, sleepover nights. Now, she knows how to ask for help when she needs it. It took me and the school to push her and help her see how far she can go. Her school became family.
I chose the better school for my child."
-Crystal Wishop, Ward 8, DC Prep Parent

"My son had a phenomenal science teacher his first-year at Washington Latin. When they finished the entire science book, he came home and said to me, 'We would have only done two chapters and closed the book at my last school. I know we made the right choice!'"
-Caroline Coleman, Ward 4, Washington Latin Parent
