About us

Worldwide Twins is an initiative supported by the International Network of Twin Registries (INTR), aiming at facilitating collaborative global twin studies and spreading the word about twin research to stakeholders and to the whole society. We are currently building on our previous efforts to create an online platform to support our aims. Meanwhile, feel free to engage with us through social media and email, especially if you want to know how to get involved in our project. Early career researchers and professionals are welcome!

Profile - Murcia Twin Registry (MTR)

The Murcia Twin Registry (MTR) is a population-based register of adult multiples in the region of Murcia, southeast Spain. The general goal of this initiative is to constitute a basic research tool for the analysis of the relative contribution of genetic and environmental factors to the development of complex phenotypes, focusing on health and health-related behaviors. So far we have contacted 2328 participants, including MZ and DZ adult twins, born between 1940 and 1966. Membership entails completing a survey that collects relevant information on sociodemographics, physical and psychological health, focusing on public health relevant variables. Additionally, a biobank has been established, linked to the registry, at the National DNA Bank. MTR data focuses on phenotypes such as obesity, breastfeeding, pain, psychoactive medication use, depression, circadian health, diabetes or quality of life. Current work uses different strategies (e.g. quantitative and molecular genetics or epigenetics) to progress research in these fields. We hold international collaborations with several consortiums and research groups and are open to new initiatives and opportunities. For more information you can contact the registry by email or visit the MTR's website.
