Hello there 👋🏻

Hello and welcome to our newest subscribers Sarah, Nic, Liz, David, Debs, Jo & Angela. It's lovely to have you here.

Do you want to know something?
It’s only 35 days until the nights start drawing in again.
It’s still raining.
There isn’t going to be another series of Schitt’s Creek, but there will be more Mrs Brown’s Boys.
 It’s Monday.
You’re currently reading another lovely newsletter from B Double E.

One of those things is good news. I’ll let you decide for yourself which one.

(Editor's note: Blimey Rob 😮 - personally I'm super excited to be able to hug people and sit inside a pub/restaurant, not just sit outside in the rain. If you want a giggle, this Twitter thread started by Leah about embarrassing booth noises is bound to bring some smiles!)

Awards Ethics - a chat with OneVoice's Peter Dickson and Hugh Edwards

There are many and various awards open to voiceovers across the globe. So what makes the OneVoice Awards any different? I chat to OneVoice founders Hugh Edwards and Peter Dickson to find out if you really can make an awards ceremony open to all and ethical.

Normalisation for voiceovers

This month I want to take a look at an audio production process that is commonly used, but often misunderstood. It’s something that I get asked about fairly regularly and there is definitely a best-practice that can be applied to this process which is often sadly lacking. That process is normalisation (or normalization if you’re American)

Bev takes on TikTok, and why that matters

I'm sure many of you will already have seen #StandingWithBev on socials but if you haven't or you want to learn more, Paul Strikwerda's blog explains. Thanks for allowing us to share this Paul.

In 2018 Bev Standing recorded about 10,000 sentences for the Chinese Institute of Acoustics to be used in translations. It’s the only Text-To-Speech job she’s ever performed.

Fast forward to 2021, TikTok seems to be using these recordings in text-to-speech applications without Bev’s permission. She never worked for TikTok, and TikTok hasn't paid her a penny.

TikTok users can now make Bev say anything they want her to say. Bev says she feels violated.

Studio Tickling Tour

Tickling Tours still aren’t happening at the moment. Hopefully they will be able to resume in the latter half of the year. Reasons are more fully explained in last month's blog. If you’re needing studio help please get in touch as I can help with most issues remotely. And also drop me a line if you want adding to the waiting list for when studio tickling can recommence.

Brand and Website Projects

I'm currently fully booked for new branding and website projects and my books are closed for now. However, I'm looking to expand the range of services I offer to give you more options. You'll be the first to hear when they are launched in July/August.

I'm still taking bookings for reviews and have slots available from June. If you want to find out more click here.
The rather wonderful folks from The Voiceover Social Podcast asked Helen to chat about all things SEO. The episode is now live and some people have even said it's not boring! Yay!
