Books to go home

Last and past Read Write Inc. Phonics storybooks

Please, please ensure children take home phonics storybooks that they can already read.

This could be the last storybook they’ve read in class or one they’ve read in the past few weeks.

Explain to parents that their children’s fluency improves on every reading.

Read Write Inc. Book Bag Books

These should only go home when:

  1. The children have read the corresponding storybook: words, characters and ideas from the storybook are repeated in the Book Bag Book.
  2. The story has been read to them – don’t send home a 'cold' book!

Assessment alert

April Y1 phonics assessment is due. Teach the identified gaps in your afternoon five-minute Speed Sound lesson and in one-to-one tutoring.

Y1 afternoon Speed Sound lesson

1. Watch Gareth teach a lesson (see Ruth's Focus Films)
2. Play Place name challenge

Write place names on the board.

Ask partners to whisper Special Friends and Fred Talk to read the word.

Then, read the word chorally using Special Friends, Fred Talk.

Make two teams:

  • Team A read names with Set 2 sounds
  • Team B read names with Set 3 sounds

Then challenge teams in turn.

Speed Group C onto Ditties

Help children to make the connection between Speed Sound (SS) cards and Green Words, i.e. whatever the word is written on or with, it says the same thing!

Ask children to:

  • Fred talk 'c-a-t' with SS cards in the pocket chart
  • Read 'cat' on a Green Word card (model Fred Talk and read)
  • Repeat with lots of CVC words (1.1 - 1.3) and progress to Ditties as soon as they can read them
  • Stop using magnetic boards
Through the day...
  • Read 'cat' on the board
  • Read 'cat' on a pink/ orange/ purple-with-spots on card!!

Hope this helps,
Best wishes

Are you an SEN teacher?

We're holding a one-day Read Write Inc. Phonics training for staff from special schools, or SEN units in mainstream schools, working with students with moderate to severe learning difficulties.

The trainer, Rebecca Loza, says:

"We know how to teach the hardest to reach children to read. Seeing a student who has previously not been able to crack the code, read simple decodable books is moving and powerful. Once students can read accurately, we help develop greater fluency and teach comprehension."

Join us on Friday 14 June in our London office.
