Yellowstone Energy Awarded DOE Funding to Accelerate Nuclear Reactor Technology
Yellowstone Energy Innovators Matthew Ellis and Samuel Shaner
Two Innovation Crossroads’ Cohort 1 team members, Sam Shaner and Matthew Ellis, recently received significant Department of Energy (DOE) funding to further advance the enabling technology behind their nuclear reactor design. Sam Shaner and Matthew Ellis, founders of Yellowstone Energy, were awarded almost $2.6 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program: Modeling-Enhanced Innovations Trailblazing Nuclear Energy Reinvigoration (MEITNER). The duo also received an additional $160,000 through DOE’s Gateway for Accelerated Innovation for Nuclear (GAIN) technology development voucher.

Yellowstone Energy was recently the focus of DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) blog. Read more here.

Don't Miss 36/86 Demo Day
The first Innovation Crossroads Demo Day is August 30 at Launch Tennessee’s annual 36/86 Entrepreneurship Festival! Attendees will hear from and have a chance to meet each of the Innovation Crossroads innovators, as well as some innovators from other DOE labs.
  • Date: August 30, 2018
  • Time: 11:00am – 12:30pm (central time)
  • Location: BB King’s (152 2ndAve N, Nashville, TN)
  • 36/86 event registration is required. Register here.
  • SkyNano Technologies: Anna Douglas (Cohort 1) has been attracting a lot of attention lately. On May 10, she was one of eight finalists (selected from over 60 startups) that pitched for $100,000 at Steve Case’s Rise of the Rest event in Chattanooga. On May 17, she won third place (and $10,000!) at Megawatt Ventures in Orlando. Congrats, Anna!

  • Active Energy: Mitchell Ishmael (Cohort 1) won the $50,000 Beyond Batteries Shark Tank event at ORNL on May 11. He was one of 20 contenders presenting advances in controllable loads, hybrid systems, and new approaches to energy storage. Daniel Simmons, DOE EERE Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, and Moe Khaleel, ORNL Associate Laboratory Director for Energy & Environmental Sciences, were the lead judges of the event. Mitchell is also a finalist for the $1 million 76West Clean Energy Competition.

  • Lux Semiconductors: Shane McMahon (Cohort 2) and Lux Semiconductors were awarded an NSF SBIR Phase 1 in June to further the development of a patent pending technology aimed at producing flexible, lightweight, and low-cost semiconductor substrates. These semiconductor substrates represent the flexible evolution of the silicon wafer and are intended to serve as a next generation platform a wide range of electronic devices and fully integrated system-on-chip designs, including sensors, displays, lighting, processors, memory, microelectronics, photovoltaics and similar 'internet of things' devices.

  • TCPoly: Matt Smith (Cohort 2) is fitting in just fine with DOE's Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL, where he’s finding a lot of interest in his 3D-printable, thermally conductive polymers (see image below). Check out the TCPoly Shop to order high thermal conductivity 3D printing filaments for use on commercial FDM printers.
