ORNL Welcomes Seven New Entrepreneurial Fellows to Innovation Crossroads

Oak Ridge National Laboratory welcomes a third group of technology innovators to join Innovation Crossroads, the Southeast’s only entrepreneurial research and development program based at a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory.

Selected through a merit-based process, these scientists and engineers will have the opportunity to advance their technologies by working with world-class science experts and unique capabilities at ORNL, including Summit, the nation’s most powerful supercomputer; the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, DOE’s largest advanced manufacturing research center; and the Spallation Neutron Source, offering atomic-level insight into advanced materials. The innovators also will be partnered with a powerful network of mentoring organizations in the Southeast to help them develop business strategies to advance their breakthroughs to market.

Cohort 3 innovators will receive support from the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).  TVA’s funding support enabled Innovation Crossroads to support two additional innovators focused on energy-related topics such as grid reliability and energy storage.  This new partnership will enable current and future innovators to leverage the regional innovation ecosystem to advance their technologies and contribute to economic growth.

The third cohort of Innovation Crossroads fellows and their projects include:

Jesse Claypoole
Founder, MantaPoole Technologies

Mantapoole is developing a roll-to-roll, manufactured, active multispectral light field (AMLF) micro-optics architecture for applications including autonomous surgery, industrial manufacturing, robotic farming, and real time robot vision.  Jesse earned a PhD in Nanoscale Science at the State University of New York Polytechnical Institute.
William Fitzhugh
Founder, American Nanotechnologies, Inc.

American Nanotechnologies is developing and demonstrating a novel dielectrophoresis (DEP) platform that can reduce the cost of semiconducting carbon nanotube production by orders of magnitude.  William earned a PhD in applied physics from Harvard University.
Hicham Ghossein
Founder, Endeavor Composites

HG Technologies is designing and implementing an innovative mixer system for the hydroentanglement process that offers several advantages over the current fiber dispersion techniques. Hicham earned a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Alex Lewis
Co-founder, Electro-Active Technologies, LLC

Electro-Active Technologies is developing a microbial electrolysis system to extract energy from organic waste streams to produce renewable products such as hydrogen.  Alex earned a PhD in energy science and engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Trevor McQueen
Co-founder, Neptune Fluid Flow Systems, LLC

Neptune Fluid Flow Systems is developing an advanced thin film cryogenic sample preparation device designed to substantially improve sample preparation for the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) community.  Trevor earned a PhD in chemistry from Stanford University.
Leila Safavi
Co-founder, Purist Inc.

Purist is developing a platform technology that can be implemented in existing underutilized research reactor infrastructure nationwide for local and on-demand medical grade radioisotope production.  Leila earned a PhD in chemical and biochemical engineering from the University of California, Irvine.
Jesse Thornburg
Co-founder, Grid Fruit, LLC

Grid Fruit is developing and evaluating a novel technology and operating framework for monitoring and control of commercial refrigeration systems installed at food retailers.  Jesse earned a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
