MESSAGE FROM PASTOR DAN

April, Spring time, New life...what a wonderful time of year for us at Spirit of Joy.  As we begin the month of April, we have so much to look forward to together. We continue our Lenten journey with Wednesday Soup Suppers through April 6th at 6 p.m..  Come join us as we walk together through this Lenten Season,  Holy Week, and Easter Sunday.  During Holy Week we begin with Palm Sunday.  Our service at 9 a.m. will include the Spirit of Joy Festival Choir presenting a message in music with "The Lamb". We will then gather together for worship on Good Friday, April 15th, 7 p.m. for a Service of the Seven Last Words.  As the sanctuary is darkened we will remember the great sacrifice our Lord has made for each of us.  On Easter Sunday we will have a Service of Celebration at 9 a.m. with festival choir special music, brass ensemble, Holy Communion and Easter Message.  Following the service plan on joining us for an Easter breakfast sponsored by our youth.  They will be accepting donations that will go toward their summer youth events.  We will have Easter Activities for the children and even a special visit for the children too.
In coming months our worship will now continue with our traditional liturgy on the first and third Sunday of each month, and the second, fourth and fifth Sundays of the month will be our contemporary service.  We look forward to all of God's people joining us in our life and ministry together at Spirit of Joy.
May God continue to bless you in your journey through Lent, the Cross, and our glorious Easter,

Pastor Dan
Easter Fellowship

Plan to stay after the service on April 17th for food and fun! There will be a special floppy-eared visitor, with gift bags for all of the kids and activities for the whole family. We look forward to seeing everyone on Easter Sunday!

Eastern Europe Crisis Response

On Feb. 24th, Russian forces invaded Ukraine, launching land, sea and air attacks. Russia has launched air strikes across the country, including on the capital of Kyiv and other major cities. Airports are now shut, and few railway lines are operational. Millions of civilians fleeing the violence are heading toward Ukraine’s western districts and such neighboring countries as Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary. Over 300 civilians have been killed in the conflict so far, and damage to civilian infrastructure has left hundreds of thousands of people without water or electricity. Ukrainian men of military age (18-60) are forbidden to leave the country, so most of those fleeing the violence are women and children. According to one report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 1 million people are seeking refuge in neighboring countries including Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Moldova. There are major humanitarian concerns for both internally displaced people and refugees. Many of these Ukrainians fleeing their homes need shelter and such basic necessities as food, water and toiletries. Care for people also includes pastoral and psychological support to address the trauma they’ve endured.

There are a number of ways that you can support relief efforts through your financial gifts. Below are some of the Lutheran organizations involved in these efforts.

Lutheran Disaster Response
Lutheran Disaster Response is accompanying our companions in Ukraine, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, as well as such ecumenical partners as Lutheran World Federation and Church World Service, in their humanitarian responses to the crisis. These partners provide refugees with immediate support and supplies such as food, blankets, water and hygiene kits. Click here to learn more.

You are invited to watch this video from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton about the situation in Eastern Europe and the ELCA’s response.

Lutheran World Relief
Lutheran World Relief received tremendous news: Nelsonville Lutheran Church in Wisconsin will double all gifts from congregations – up to $258,000 – for our neighbors suffering in the Ukraine crisis. Right now, Lutheran World Relief teams are working with partners in and around Ukraine. Your congregation’s gift will deliver urgent support and care, like: food, shelter and other critically needed items; Mission Quilts and Kits for families who fled their homes; and medicine and supplies for clinics.

Gifts will be matched through April 25. You can give online at www.lwr.org/match or by mailing to LWR, PO Box 17061, Baltimore, MD 21297-1061. Please write “Ukraine Match” in the memo line.

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service
Already more than 2 million refugees have escaped to neighboring countries—half of whom are children. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service is closely monitoring the situation and stands in solidarity with our Ukrainian neighbors. We are dedicated to supporting Ukrainian refugees and immigrants however possible, in keeping with our long history of supporting refugees from Eastern Europe and around the world.

LIRS stands committed to providing the absolute best care to refugees and immigrants who arrive in the United States, and we are working hard to bolster the refugee resettlement program to welcome more new Americans. To make a gift that will impact the lives of those we are serving domestically, visit lirs.org/give.

Please Pray:
Oh Divine, most mighty, most merciful, our sacred stories tell us that you help and save your people. You are the fortress: may there be no more war. You are the harvest: may there be no more hunger. You are the light: may no one die alone or in despair. Oh Divine, most majestic, most motherly, grant us your life. Amen.

Your Annual Commitment-Never to Late to Ignite Your Generosity
This year our theme is Ignite Your Generosity.  We are thankful for those who have made their commitment for the coming year.  We encourage those who worship in person, and those who live stream, if you have not yet made your commitment please plan to do so soon.  We are counting on the entire congregation to be ready for what God has in store for us as we embark on a new and exciting path in the new year.
Youth Ministry Happenings

Happy April! Here are some updates regarding our youth program for the month!

Youth Group:
We will be having Youth Group from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church April 3rd, 10th, & 24th. There will be no youth group on Easter Sunday. I encourage all students from 6th-12th grade to join us and to bring a friend with them!

Easter Sunday:
The youth will be hosting a Breakfast on Easter Sunday following the 9:00 service. If there are any students or parents available to help donate their time or supplies please contact me as soon as possible as we begin to hammer out details for that morning! There will also be a free will donation pot for members to donate to the youth to help them raise money for the summer trip.

Confirmation:
Confirmation will be starting up again on April 3rd before the service at 8:30 a.m. Anyone who was in confirmation during the first semester this past fall needs to join us this second six weeks in order to finish their confirmation.

Summer Trip:
We are unfortunately unable to attend the sonshine ministries houseboats summer trip due to their cancellation of summer activities. So I am quickly looking for an equally exciting, fun, and spiritually fulfilling trip for our high school students to attend this summer! The trip will still be happening in early/mid June. We are bummed about the postponement of the houseboats, but I am excited because this allows us to have more spots for students to join us!
I will have information out to you all so you can prepare as soon as I possibly can!

Thank you for all of your support for our youth ministry here at Spirit of Joy
Blessings,
Randi-Kate
Women's Bible Study

Calling all women of the congregation!  The Women's bible study completed its first five-week session on Rahab. It was a resounding success. The study mixes bible study with praise music, prayer requests, and a lively discussion.  Our next five-week session will focus on The Prodigal Son. We will meet at 530 p.m. on the following Mondays:  Apr.25, May 2, May 9, May 23, and May 30.  Don't worry if you missed the first session on Rahab... this is a whole new study.  The meetings are an hour, so you will be on your way home before it gets dark!

The study book is available to purchase on Amazon, but you don't need to buy the book to participate. We can make copies of the lessons.
