RURALIZATION Conference – Facilitating our Future Farmers

The RURALIZATION project at NUI Galway, along with the National Rural Network, is hosting an online conference on Monday 14 December, 2-4.15pm. The conference brings together speakers to explore how we can enable our future farmers gain access to farmland and the farming sector.
 

Grow Remote Featured on Smart Rural 21 Website

Grow Remote is now featured on the Smart Rural 21 project website as a Smart Solution. The Smart Solutions database, supported by the European Commission (DG AGRI), gives access to a wide range of innovative practices adaptable to various local contexts.

NRN Biodiversity Farmer of the Year Award 2020 Winner Announced

The winner of the 2020 National Rural Network Biodiversity Farmer of the Year, in association with Macra na Feirme, is Joe Melody from Bunratty Co. Clare. Joe is a dairy and purebred suckler farmer, farming 360 acres in a registered farm partnership with his father.

2020 Advance Payments of €152 million Paid to Date under GLAS in November

The 2020 advance payments under the Green Low-Carbon Agri Environment Scheme (GLAS) commenced in early November. At the time of writing almost 42,000 GLAS farmers had received the payment with further payment runs under way by the Department. Payments to date include the payment to over 3,000 farmers of the GLAS PLUS top up of €3.6m.

EU Commission Engages Citizens on Protecting Biodiversity

Biodiversity, on which we all depend, is disappearing at an unprecedented rate. The European Commission has created a roadmap that will contribute to the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy goals to put Europe's biodiversity on the path to recovery. The Commission recently held a public consultation to gather EU citizens' views on the roadmap. Feedback will be taken into account for further development and fine-tuning of the initiative.
CLIMATE CHANGE

Signpost Series: November Focus

The National Rural Network, in association with Teagasc ConnectED, Dairy Sustainability Ireland, and Food Drinks Ireland Skillnet, is currently hosting a series of online webinars called the Signpost Series.

To the end of November, we have held 35 webinars covering various topics from agricultural policy, soil fertility, climate change, the MACC, water quality, forestry, energy, and biodiversity.

Teagasc Launches National Farm Survey Sustainability Report 2019

Teagasc have launched their most recent figures detailing the sustainability of Irish farms. They do this by collecting extensive farm-level data, including farming activities, expenditure on inputs, revenue received from the sale of outputs and receipt of subsidies, and demographic data, including information on the farmers and their families.

The report was delivered by Trevor Donnellan and Cathal Buckley from Teagasc via a webinar on Tuesday November 3rd. Kevin Hanrahan, Teagasc, facilitated the webinar.

The winners of the LEADER Impact Campaign, asking those who have drawn down LEADER funding to tell the story of how their LEADER funded project has made an impact by creating their own short video, have been announced.

LEADER Updates from County Kildare LEADER Partnership

County Kildare LEADER Partnership (CKLP) release a LEADER newsletter every month detailing the latest happenings of the LEADER programme within the county. This latest edition details the progression of a number of LEADER funded projects including the Fairgreens Park in Castledermot, the development of a number of walking and cycling trails along the river Barrow as part of the Barrow Blueway Strategy and the almost completed Hartwell Creative Retreat Centre which is a farm diversification project outside the village of Kill.

New NRN EIP-AGRI Guest Blog from the Caomhnú Árann Project

A new EIP-AGRI guest blog is now available on the NRN website. Dr Amanda Browne, Scientific and Technical Officer of the Caomhnú Árann EIP-AGRI Project, outlines the field scoring system developed for the Aran Islands (but applicable elsewhere), where farmer self-assessment is the end goal thereby reducing administration costs and training farmers to identify grasslands of high conservation value, and rewarding them for conserving and maintaining them.

FARM VIABILITY & COMPETITIVENESS

New NRN Case Study on Producer Organisations Published

The NRN have recently added a case study on Producer Organisations (POs) to their website. POs are similar to co-operatives because they are producer owned and controlled organisations which allow members to better their position in the supply chain and negotiate better prices with producers through collective bargaining on behalf of their members.
