Buying and Selling Online
The Internet has become a thriving channel for people to buy and sell goods and services. When you shop or sell online, please be smart about the whole purchasing process. Use your common sense and trust your instincts.
Some tips for staying safe are:
- Only deal with trusted and reliable businesses and sellers. Know who you are dealing with and check the contact details you have are correct.
- Read all the fine print including warranty, refund, complaints handling and privacy policies.
- Only pay via a secure web page—one that has a valid digital certificate.
- Use a secure payment method such as PayPal, BPay, or a card that you use for internet banking only. Avoid money transfers and direct bank deposits.
Beware of Scammers delivering Malware this Christmas
Watch out for fake parcel delivery scams or receipt for orders arriving in your email Inbox this Christmas. Scammers take advantage of the busy Christmas season to send you emails about ‘missed parcel delivery’ or ‘receipt for your order’ and with your name on it. If you have placed an online order you may instantaneously think this is real. Check the email address, the company name and structure of the email. It is more likely to be a scam.
Scammers want you to open the attachment or download the file in this email. If you follow these instructions a file will load on to your computer and install ransomware as soon as it is opened. Ransomware is a type of malware that freezes your computer and demands a ransom for you to be able to access your computer again. Scammers will ask you for money. Even if you pay the fee, there is no guarantee that your computer will be unlocked.
If you receive an email about a package or order, do not open the attachment or download files. Delete the email. Do not reply. If you have made an online order and want to query it, contact the company direct either through the email address or phone that you know it to be, not the details on the email scam. Remember to also regularly back up your computer on a separate hard drive.
