TANGIER, MOROCCO
From its seat on the northern coast of Morocco facing Spain across the strait of Gibraltar, the so-called Door to Africa is a city with a vibrant past and expanding future. In the 1920s, Tangier was a cosmopolitan city of expats, brimming with European and American diplomats, spies, writers, and businessmen. Later, it played host to the Beat Generation of writers in the 1950s. Today, the city is a glorious mix of its long history of mixed influence, shining through in its delicious food, unwieldy medina, and infamous cafe culture.

WHAT WE'RE DOING

Visiting the Caves of Hercules, Tangier's mythical founder and hero. Prehistoric humans lived in the natural formations long ago, but the manmade disc incisions from centuries of quarrying for millstones add another level of complexity to the system's visuals. Take quick day trip out of the city to reach this interesting excursion, and go for a stroll down the long beaches that surround the cave as the sun sets.

WHAT WE'RE EATING

Absorb the wonders of Tangier's cafe culture at the open air Cafe Hafa, gazing out over the open sea. The cafe has been operating for more than 90 years and is an icon of the city; its structure is made up of a series of white balconies and terraces descending slowly down the hillside to the Mediterranean. Sip sweet tea with mint leaves while you take in views of the lost Moorish kingdom of Andalusia across the strait.

WHERE WE'RE STAYING

The Hotel Nord-Pinus Tanger is a six-bedroom, beautifully refurbished 18th-century palace settled just above the casbah. The rooms are filled with Syrian chandeliers, Indian silks, and antique furniture sourced from the local market. Hang out on the rooftop with a glass of Moroccan wine and enjoy the stunning vistas.

WHAT WE'RE TAKING

Taking a note from the writers before us, we'll be taking a Leuchtturm1917 grid journal to detail the wonders and adventures of our time in Tangier. Bullet journalers love the Leuchtturm for its simple, transformable grid layout that helps you lay out all the thoughts in your head without being encumbered by extraneous lines.
