Dear Alumni,

Christmas is around the corner and we will soon enter the New Year, 2017. Now is the right time to look back and evaluate the year that has passed. It has been one year since the University Advancement Office was established
with the main target to support the further development of AAU’s Alumni Community. We have reached more alumni than ever before, communicating with them via social media, email, and phone calls. Of course, we are still continuing with formal and informal events that give members of the Alumni Community a chance to meet personally and foster relationships. Some of you have already experienced these events, such as the Alumni Winter Mixer 2016, the Alumni Spring Reunion 2016, and the Alumni Classy Business Mixer. We will be happy if you join us at the upcoming Alumni Winter Mixer 2017.

In 2016, the University Advancement Office also initiated many projects to further develop and support the Alumni Community. Among these projects are the Alumni Ambassadors, the Mentoring Program, and the launch of the AAU Alumni Card. We are also very happy that we have established alumni giving as one of the channels of support for the University and its Alumni Community. I would like to thank all of our donors from both inside and outside the Alumni Community for their support that has made a huge difference and has given us more possibilities to support Anglo-American University.

This year was also big in terms of changes for Anglo-American University. The University received accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), a prominent American accreditation agency recognized by the US Department of Education. There have also been changes in leadership at the University. If you would like to know more about these changes, you can visit our website and read through the official announcement.

Anglo-American University is growing every year and we hope you are proud of your alma mater. We will do the best we can to make 2017 an even more successful year. Dear alumni of Anglo-American University, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Roman Shbat
University Advancement Manager
Dear Alumni,

Mid-December is the time of the year when we are getting ready
for seasonal festivities, but also shifting focus on reflecting on what went well over the last twelve months.

There is a renewed and increased level of energy in AAU’s Alumni Community. The new Alumni Council has almost completed the first half of its term and over the course of 2016, much has happened that we are proud of – the initiation of alumni donations, the Mentoring Program, and the Alumni Card, just to name a few. With more targeted communication and several successful networking events behind us, we have a better grasp of the needs and dynamics of the alumni family.

We hope that in 2017 you too will play an active role in alumni matters. The mixer for 2017 is planned for February 9th, the Alumni Winter Mixer 2017, and you are warmly invited to come and see how the school is changing and how the Alumni Community is growing.

I want to assure you that we continue to be healthily ambitious and have more plans for how to expand the reach to more alumni and to create even more value for past AAU students.

On behalf of the Alumni Council, I wish you a joyful Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017!

Soňa Krousová,
Chairwoman of the Alumni Council

New Alumni Story
Johana Vamberská

On November 24th, I had the pleasure to sit down with Johana Sedláčková Vamberská for a coffee, just across the road from her office. I hadn’t seen her for a few of years since she finished her Bachelor’s in International Relations at AAU, but her name and presence certainly had not faded as I had heard about her continuing her studies at Oxford and spearheading a new poetry sharing app called Poetizer. So, I was able to get the scoop on what she’s been up to, and also find out a bit about where this alumna came from.

November at the School of IRD was our busiest month yet!

Dean Daniela Lenčéš Chalániová kick-started the month when she was invited to make a speech at a conference on migration held by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs –Picturing Refugees in the Czech Migration Discourse.

The Chair of the Department of Politics, Dr. Ayan, organized a lecture on Women and Islam featuring Assistant Prof. Dr. Feyda Sayan-Cengiz. A few days later, Dr. Lipka invited professors Dr.h.c. Michael Christopher Burda, Ph.D.
and Dr. Karl-Heinz Paqué to discuss Life after the Euro Crisis.

Our students and alumni weren’t idle either. Together with Dr. Soukupová and part of the NATO Virtual Academy, they took a trip that was far from virtual: on November 17th, the NATO class made a trip to Vilseck (Germany), home of the US 2nd Cavalry Regiment also known as the 2nd Dragoons. Besides the gained knowledge, everybody had good fun trying out the assortment of armor as well as ‘playing’ around the military vehicles. Check out the gallery

And, last but not least, the Professors in the Pub debates continued in grand style. In early November, we talked with Bill Eddleston about migration in Australia and the rise of the right and on December 1st we talked with Rob Cameron, BBC correspondent in the Czech Republic, about Brexit. Even if somewhat strangely, the last debate did not take place in a pub, but rather in a classroom. We still had a passionate discussion and the largest crowd yet! See for yourself
here, and
a huge thanks goes to George Hays for the organization!
Of course, if you’d like to come to any other IRD events in Spring 2017, join our
School of IRD Facebook Community or follow our events on
Merry Christmas from the SIRD!
