A New Tax Framework for Avoidance of Double Taxation: Implications for U.S. and Spanish Companies
On the occasion of entry into force on November 27, 2019 of the new Protocol amending the Convention between the United States and Spain for the Avoidance of Double Taxation, the Spanish Embassy is organizing a workshop on important changes introduced by this new Protocol. The new Protocol will provide for exclusive residence-state taxation of interest, royalties, certain capital gains and parent-subsidiary dividends; it will mitigate double taxation and tax withholding on companies; and it will include a mandatory binding arbitration provision to resolve disputes. The new Protocol also provides for the full exchange of information between the competent authorities to facilitate the administration of each country’s tax laws.

WIIT and Embassy of Canada Host
Chief Trade Negotiators Event
Navigating the intensive trade negotiations to conclude the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as a lead negotiator was the overarching theme at the event on September 16th co-sponsored by WIIT and the Embassy of Canada. Vanessa Sciarra, Vice President for Legal Affairs and Trade & Investment Policy at the National Foreign Trade Council, moderated the discussion with a powerhouse of female chief negotiators from the CPTPP talks: Kristen Hillman, Acting Ambassador for the Embassy of Canada and chief negotiator for Canada; Barbara Weisel, Managing Director of Rock Creek Global Advisors and chief negotiator for the U.S.; and Andrea Phua, Counsellor (Economics) from the Embassy of Singapore and deputy chief for Singapore.
The panelists shared their personal experiences from the CPTPP negotiations, and the challenges and opportunities they encountered as the women tasked with securing an agreement for their countries. The conversation provided a unique perspective on female leadership in trade policy, as well as insights on Asia-Pacific trade.
