It's the new year, that means it's engagement season! Everywhere you look you see people on social media with brand new bling! Even though it might be early in your engagement, it's never too early to start thinking about your engagement session! Here are a few things to keep in mind before setting a date with your photographer.

1. Choose the right season - We are obviously in the Midwest with ever-changing weather and seasons. Think about what season might be special to you and your significant other. I like to do the opposite season of your wedding date!  This gets you more variety in your photos! A summer wedding? Fall engagement photos would be perfect!

2. Plan for your save the dates - If you are sending out save the dates, remember it's best to get those out 6-9 months before your wedding date. It's best to plan your session around when you want to get those out! Turn-around time for engagement photos is typically 2-3 weeks, so keep that in mind as well!

3. Outfits- Possibly the biggest stressor of all photo shoots...WHAT DO WE WEAR? Simple, you wear what is YOU. Don't try to be someone you aren’t for your photo session. Wear what is comfortable! You want to coordinate, not match. I always direct clients to Pinterest, where there are lots and lots of outfit boards for inspiration!

4. Posing - The one question I always get that is so surprising to me is... 'Are you going to tell us what to do?' Of
course I will!! I understand that this will sometimes be a couple's first time being professionally photographed. I am here to guide you and help you with posing! Of course we want it to look natural, but you don't have to go into your session thinking you will have to do all the work!

As you start this journey that is wedding planning, these are just a few things to keep in mind when you finally get to your engagement shoot.

Cheers!

It is about time to start printing all of those amazing photos from 2017. If you are printing photographs only refer to the correct size and image resolution. The rest of these tips are for design files only when working with an outside printer.  =) - Kristi

I can't believe 2017 has come and gone. I feel like I say that every year. Funny how the older you get, the quicker the years fly by. 2017 has been a great year for me and a great year for VSI. I went through all my shoots, and holy smokes, I can't believe all that I have accomplished this year. Shooting families one by one throughout the month, it doesn't seem like there are that many, but when you add them up as a whole, whoa mama!! I was a part of 215 families' lives this year. 215 times I was able to capture what life is all about, love. I had 65 babies first-year clients in 2017. That alone is mind-blowing. 65 new moms and dads chose me to capture their baby’s first moments on this earth. 30 engagement shoots, 30 times I got to know a couple before spending all day with them on their BIG day. 20 weddings, 20 times I was there to watch as a couple takes their first steps into forever. 17 seniors, 17 times I left feeling like I was just a small part of these kiddos bright future. Along with all these, I also did 14 boudoir shoots, 47 minis, 3 preschools, 2 dance studios and 21 headshots. I'm not going to lie, that is a lot!  But I love it! I say that every year, every day. I am so thankful for all of my amazing clients that let me continue to live my dream year after year, month after month, day after day. Cheers to all of you and HAPPY 2018! - Holly

Is it really 2018? How time really flies when you are having fun!

I am not a huge fan of resolutions being made for the New Year, but rather goals! I have a handful of goals that I definitely want to work on this year and the years to come. Goals that improve physical, mental and spiritual health and overall well-being. Here is a look at some of them:

PHYSICAL
1. Drink more water - like all the time. Your body needs it.
2. Embrace green tea - because why not?
3. Sit less - Altering my desk back to a standing desk. I have been sitting full time since being about 6 months pregnant.
Since Tman is about a year and a half it's pry time I get back to it. =/
4. Start taking care of my skin - I will be turning 30 in about 6 months, and it is about time I start washing my face every night and keeping up with a skincare routine before I regret it!

FINANCIAL
1. Establish and follow a zero balance budget - Check out this free app that helps you tell your money where to go instead of you wondering where it went! EVERY DOLLAR
2. Follow our snowball debt payoff plan - seems simple enough. Here is a link to another free resource that will calculate your debt payoffs for you! This will help to keep you motivated about continuing with your plan.
UNDEBT IT

MENTAL
1. Read more - Anything, get lost in a book.
2. Learn & embrace self-care - This has always been a struggle for me. It is about time I learned how to care for... myself. Here are some resources to help you find ways to take care of yourself. 45 SIMPLE SELF CARE PRACTICES
3. Travel - disconnect and be present!

PERSONAL
1. Blog more.
2. Finish and publish my book.

What do you want to embrace over the next year/years? Be sure to read about how well I am actually embracing these goals on my blog: redefinedrefuge.com!
