President's Message

I love when an idea becomes reality and gets built upon. At a board meeting earlier this year, it was suggested that we start a WBC Book Club. Being an avid reader of fiction, I often struggle to read business-related books. I see books as a way to “escape reality” and not as a way to learn (hey, I did enough of that in college!). However, the discussion that our first book club had was so engaging and revealing that Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy, reminded me that you CAN teach an “old dog” new tricks. Stopping to take a moment for self-reflection is something I don’t do enough.

Our discussion inspired us to expand upon the message and create a new approach to our November luncheon. We will be using Amy Cuddy’s TED Talk “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are” as a springboard for discussion led by Suzanne Young. I noticed that I’m paying more attention to my body language and changing my work environment to promote more “power poses” rather than hunched over and limiting my movement.

I learned that self-reflection doesn’t mean sitting cross-legged, saying “Om” and meditating. It’s really just a daily inventory of your character, actions and motives. I encourage each of you to take some time over the next few days to think about how you want to be perceived by others and aligning your actions to achieve that perception.

Summer is a GREAT time for reading, so pick up our next book club book, Raving Fans by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. You have plenty of time to read it…our next book club meeting isn’t until October 18th.

Happy reading!

Your Photo Guru

Tell us about your business:  In the simplest of terms, I am a photo organizer.  I am an independent consultant for two companies, Creative Memories--supplying hard goods for scrapbook-style and slip-in style photo albums, and Forever(TM)--a media transfer and digital storage service as well as a software provider for photo organization and designing and printing photo books and gifts.

Who is a good referral for you?  A good referral for me is anyone who has jpegs "trapped" on their phone and/or computers, have piles of developed photographs hiding under the bed or in drawers, or who have outdated media they need converted to digital for easier viewing/printing.  A photo is not a photo until it is printed!

What inspired you to attend WBC?  Initially, it was a way for me to have one hot meal prepared for me that I didn't cook and which didn't involve a toddler tugging on my pantleg asking for a meal of her own.  I attended as a guest in August 2003 and joined right away!

Have you done business with any WBC members?  I have assisted a number of members and their friends over the years with a number of projects.  Perhaps the most notable is the WBC itself, who engaged my services in 2013 for its 25th anniversary celebration.  I created a poster for each Presidency denoting the various accomplishments of each era of leadership.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?  If it's autumn, I watch football; if it's winter; basketball and hockey; if it's spring and summer, it's baseball.  I watch more sports than my spouse!  I cheer on my Philly teams as well as my alma mater, the Northwestern Wildcats.

Tell us about your family:  Married 24 years to hubby Heath Eddy; two daughters, Deidre (16 1/2) and Kasey (6); and my father, Harry (whom I often refer to as my "toddler"), 81.

When life seems to be spiraling out of control, stop to consider it is because of the choices we have made.  At work, we choose which projects to take on, which tasks to delegate, what time to arrive and what time to leave.

Sometimes we feel it is imposed on us but at the very root, it is a choice.  At home we choose what chores to tackle and what to leave for tomorrow.  We choose how to incorporate family time and ME time.

For us all, there are only 24 hours in a day.  Choose to manage those hours and not let your choices manage you.
