President's Message

Just Scootin’ Through
Right before Labor Day weekend, I broke my foot. People that know me immediately thought “Well, THIS should be a good story!” I wasn’t skiing, I wasn’t dancing on a bar, I wasn’t exercising. I was walking, plain and simple. Truly, I tripped over my pant leg. Lesson: NO MORE FLOWY PANTS! I’m in a boot for 12 weeks…that takes me through Thanksgiving weekend with no weight bearing on my foot. You may have seen me on my blinged-out scooter, my best friend for another 4 weeks (crutches are the WORST, but I still have to use them sometimes).

Some things I’ve learned (other than the dangers of flowy pants!)

  1. I have to ask for help. This is very difficult for me, as I like to do everything for myself.
  2. I rely on the help of strangers. I am amazed at the kindness of strangers, but puzzled by the complete LACK of kindness of strangers. People will stand and watch me struggle opening the door with crutches. I had one person roll their eyes at me when I asked for them to open the door for me. I clearly have a temporary disability, I have not mastered the art of having one leg to use. I welcome any help I can get!
  3. My husband loves me. He really, truly loves me. He has been amazing during the past 8 weeks, exhibiting patience and thoughtfulness.
  4. My teenaged daughter is embarrassed by me. Well, that was true BEFORE the scooter, but WOW is it so much easier to embarrass her now!
  5. My friends are amazing. The outpouring of help, love and friendship has been incredible. If you ever wonder how to help someone or “do something” for them, here are some ideas: offer to go sit with them and catch up, drop off easy-to-prepare food (snacks and wine are good too!), go pick them up and take them somewhere they love (and is handicapped accessible). One friend sent me a gift card to Famous Footwear so that I could get flats for my vacation.
  6. Life does not stop. Instead of immediately thinking I CAN’T do something with my injury, I think “How can I make this work?”. Admittedly, it is challenging sometimes and takes 5 times as long as it would if I could walk, but I feel a sense of accomplishment when I do something for myself without having to ask someone to help me.

As we head into the season of giving thanks, take a moment and think of someone in your life that could use a little help.

I look forward to seeing you at our next luncheon on November 14th!

What inspired you to attend WBC? I was searching for a networking group that was more than simply exchanging business cards. With the WBC I found personal and business support, education, and friendships. I joined after my first luncheon.

Have you done business with any WBC members?  I have been blessed to do business with several WBC members over the past few years and have also done business with individuals referred to me by members.

What is your favorite thing to do in your spare time?  My most favorite things to do are camping, mt biking, and snowboarding with my family.  I also relish watching my kids in their activities and sports and having our regular family game/movie nights.

Tell us about your family:  I have been married to the love of my life Tony for 19 years and have 2 of the best kids I could ever hope for. Kyle is 13 and Makenna is 7.
