AOC Takes the Lead in Opioid Management
UCSF Chief Administrative Officer & AOC President, Richard Capra, led the AOC Opioid Management Workgroup's presentation at last year’s Business & Leadership Symposium at UPenn. This provided a great deal of needed information surrounding Orthopaedics and the opioid crisis we are in today. As part of this work they developed and distributed a 50-page digital manual to all AOC Departments (this manual and the presentation are available on the AOC website). The workgroup’s presentation fulfilled their overall goal of providing specific information and data for Patient Education and Awareness, Opioid Sparing, Legislative, and Research pillars. They also shared that there is a high level of variability in opioid management across member hospitals, a need for Best Practice sharing, and a need for tools for implementation.

The AOC Opioid Management Workgroup was asked to continue their work and to survey current protocols/guidelines/use within the AOC member institutions. This would be done to develop a grid outlining these use patterns in the hope of learning more about the variability and to ultimately design a protocol/playbook for reducing or eliminating opioids as a pain-management treatment. The Workgroup will use this data to propose best practices and to work with pilot member sites to implement this new protocol/playbook, collect data as appropriate, and present at the 2019 AOC Annual Meeting.

A quick, must-read from the HBR! Taking the time to see where everyone stands is the first step to getting everyone to truly stand together.
Gratitude | Louie Schwartzberg | TEDxSF
Nature's beauty can be easily missed — but not through Louie Schwartzberg's lens. His stunning time-lapse photography, accompanied by powerful words from Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, serves as a meditation on being grateful for every day. (Filmed at TEDxSF.)
Note from Mike:

As leaders, we have a responsibility to inspire and to connect our teams to a common purpose and a set of goals and objectives. GRATITUDE creates a powerful fabric that can connect all of us together in a meaningful and deep way. In its best form, it is rooted in authenticity and it comes from the heart. It is in such short supply that it often comes as a surprise when it is received. GRATITUDE can carry us through the most difficult of times and allow us to experience new heights together. This video is one of the most viewed TED talks of all time and it lasts 10 minutes. Please push the pause button in your busy day and take time to be still and to be quiet and to reflect on this important message. Watch the video in its entirety, you will not be sorry.
