“In the middle of the night, I know that I can text him about a shooting and he is already en route to help out.  I am so grateful to him.”  - Sandra Medinilla, MD, MPH, Trauma Surgeon

Recently, Wilmington Cease Violence organized a block party with over 300 people in attendance.  Two rival gangs showed up in an effort to make peace, a peace negotiated by Derrick Chambers.  A young boy caught a glimpse of a gun on one of the gang members and told Derrick. The man with the gun had recently been released from prison. He was wary of the rival gang and one member in particular. Masterfully, Derrick brought the two men, as well as their leaders, together and helped them recognize that the truce was for every member, even those recently released from prison. With his kind, gentle and charismatic nature, he diffused the situation and ensured the safety of all that day.

Derrick is brave, sincere and embodies the spirit of Mr. Willis Young. He is originally from the Riverside neighborhood of Wilmington and is committed to its uplift. Derrick aspires to complete his Bachelor of Arts in Ancient Eastern Studies and is the proud father of four children ages 19, 21, and 23.
