The Polls Are Open.

Good morning, Lake Park. We're heading to the polls today -- or at least we should be (seriously, go vote!). Here's some down-the-middle (as best I can) information on today's vote with links to Naples News articles.

First, The Logisitcs.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; voters in line by 7 p.m. will get a chance to vote after the polls close
Power has been out since around 11am this morning.

Voters can find their assigned precinct on their voter information card or at www.CollierVotes.com under the "Find My Precinct" tab. (Many Lake Park Residents vote at Oasis Church at 1074 10th St N, Naples, FL 34102).

Four candidates are running for three seats on the City Council, which is elected at-large and not by districts. The top three vote-getters will be elected to the seven-member council.

On the ballot are small-business owner Terry Hutchison, real estate agent Mitch Norgart, incumbent Linda Penniman, and former councilman and finance manager Gary Price.

Voters must provide a photo and signature ID, such as a Florida driver's license, U.S. passport or a veteran health ID card issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Second, The Politics.

Our City faces a number of critical issues. One of them is the runaway spending of council.

A $6.5mil City Dock, $3mil over-budget-fire-station at $8.5mil, $10.6mil (although total project is much higher) Baker Park construction contract, and $20mil in Irma spending has many citizens wondering how the city plans to manage this debt or possesses the ability to undertake any other major city projects that are needed (see ugly/outdated storm drains dumping polluted water offshore, storm grade street-and-stop signs, and a parking garage).

Elections have consequences.

Third, The Endorsements.

The Naples Daily News Editorial Board:

Vice Mayor Linda Penniman is an independent, sound thinker who unquestionably deserves a second four-year term. Our editorial board also endorses knowledgeable former Councilman Gary Price and businessman Terry Hutchison, who adds an important voice from a neighborhood east of U.S. 41. (Source)

Sparker's Soapbox:

Hutchison, Penniman and Price would have my vote. All three have demonstrated a commitment to community service and conservative financial management. I like the positions each has expressed on issues facing the City, and their desire for more community input before decision-making. With this research behind me, I could very comfortably cast my ballot. (Source)
