Deanna Ferrell
Safe States Rising Star

Deanna Ferrell, VIPP epidemiologist and evaluator, is this year's recipient of the Safe States Rising Star Award. This award recognizes individuals who have been working in the injury field for less than five years. Deanna coordinates evaluation plans, enjoys working with community partners, and helps develop the VIPP's work through shared risk and protective factors. Away from the office, Deanna enjoys exploring Utah through climbing, skiing, and hiking.
Falls Prevention Awards Ceremony
The Utah Department of Health recognized many of the hard working individuals from across the state for their work in Falls Prevention. Thank you to all who attended, and to all of those who work tirelessly on this important topic!

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

Falls Prevention Awareness
As part of Fall Prevention Awareness Day on September 23, the Utah Department of Health released several videos promoting awareness and helping individuals find the resources they need to prevent a fall. The video was part of that campaign.

New Fact Sheet on Student Brain Injuries
The Utah Department of Health recently released a new fact sheet which gives an overview of head injuries which occur in Utah's schools. Along with that fact sheet, we released a video on social media to improve public awareness and to educate parents and educators on the signs and symtoms of a concussion.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in Utah. Take a look at this flyer from the Utah TBI Fund to learn more about what Utah is doing to help those affected by a TBI and the resources available.
Successful Events from Last Quarter
USARA Recovery Day
Lauren Radcliffe and Amelia Prebish attended USARA's Recovery Day in September. VIPP distributed over 1,000 promotional items, and supported those on their recovery journey by providing resources and information on naloxone access and overdose prevention. Stop the Opidemic materials were also distributed, in hopes to reduce the stigma, and let those in recovery know that sharing their story is a part of the solution. 
Brain Injury Alliance of Utah Annual Conference
The Brain Injury Alliance of Utah is holding its annual conference on October 10-11. Attendees had the chance to learn about important topics like suicide prevention, community resources, behavioral management, and much more.
