Starting the semester off strong!

Recaps of our January events including: Town Hall, First Meeting, and Meet & Greet
Town Hall, January 25
The semester started off strong with our Town Hall meeting on January 29, 2018. Our Officer Board and Committee Chairs shared their ideas with us on how to help the organization, improve, grow, and benefit members.
  • Academic Development Committee Chairs Mikey Reeve and Elia Taase discussed new ideas they had for their committee, such as their study buddy and BAP buddy programs.
  • Co-coordinator of the Mentorship Program, Adriana Ramos, proposed her ideas about involving alumni mentors, and how that would be implemented.
  • Associate Treasurer, Vincent Nguyen explained his new recycling initiative, as well as a raffle to encourage members to RSVP for speaking engagements and other events.
  • Director of Professional Development, Stanley Lam spoke about his various plans this semester, including the Women in Business panel, Community College Connection project, and  workshops he has planned for our members.
Thank you to all BAP&AS members that attended the Town Hall Meeting. We look forward to keeping you updated as their projects progress through the semester!
Introductory Meeting and Meet & Greet, January 31

We held our Intro Meeting at the USU Auditorium on Wednesday, January 31. The officer board for Spring 2018 each introduced themselves and their roles. In addition, they announced the key events throughout the semester.

Meet & Greet followed the intro meeting at the USU Games Center. We had a wonderful turnout with many students excited for the upcoming semester! After the Introductory meeting, our Special Event Committee did a wonderful job planning our first social, which included a bowling and pool tournament.  Winners of the tournament were given gift cards to Starbucks and Target. Congrats to Gabriel Limon and Luna Sakane for winning free memberships for the semester. A special thank you to Becker for sponsoring the event and thank you to everyone who came as you all made it a marvelous evening!

BAP&AS Recruiting, January 2018
Recruiting Committee co-chairs, Chase Rossi and Sunny Scarbrough, spent the last month planning and recruiting for our organization. They set up a table in the CBA Courtyard through the first week of school and organized room representatives to introduce who we are to each accounting class. We’ve had a great turnout of new members this semester. Thank you for all your hard work!

Introducing our Spring 2018 Officer Board

Meet our new officer board with officer board bios
Taylor Berecz
President
Graduating December 2018

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My biggest goal for the semester is to focus on relationships. I wish to strengthen our member’s relationships with each other to create a cohesive whole. At the same time, I would like to form a strong bond with as many members as possible to hear their stories and learn about all of them.

What motivates you to work hard?
When I am challenged and required to complete a complex and unfamiliar task. I feel we learn and gain the most from these types of situations and I am motivated to solve the unsolved.

What's your proudest accomplishment?
Starting up my online reselling business with video games.
Jessica Lam
Vice President
Graduating May 2019

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My personal goals are to get good grades in my classes while managing my time in my position and exercising regularly. As Vice President, my goal this semester is to connect with our members and educate them about the various opportunities that they can do with their accounting degrees (public accounting, private accounting, nonprofits, and government).

What was the last movie you went to? What did you think?
Coco! (Yes, it's been a while.) I thought it was really cute and had a good message about the importance of family. I watched it just before the holidays, so it was perfect timing.

Soojin Kim
Director of Accounting Society
Graduating December 2019

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My goal this semester is to plan good events for our members because I want everyone to have fun and enjoy their time.

What's your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is falling down while ice skating and riding a bicycle.

What is your favorite family vacation?
My favorite family vacation is when I went to New Zealand because I got to feed the baby sheep and shave the fur.
John Gawaran
Director of Records
Graduating May 2018

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
I want to end my final semester with a 4.0 GPA while leading a great pledge class.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch and play?
My favorite sport to watch and play is basketball, with my favorite team being the Lakers.

If you could hire someone to help you, would it be with cleaning, cooking, or yard work?
I would hire someone to cook for me. I need to start eating healthy and having someone meal prep for me would make it easier.
Brent Tuanquin
Director of Correspondence
Graduating December 2018

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My goal this semester is to be someone that newer members can look up to. I was once in their position before and I hope I can make as much of an impact on them as past officers and members have made on me. As DoC, I want to be able to reach out to all our members. And I hope everyone loves the shirt I designed!

Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or drive a car?
Much to the shock of many of my peers, I do enjoy driving. Not sure I would like to ride a horse and, as much as I like biking around, I don’t really get too far. So driving it is. Especially long drives on PCH.
Stanley Lam
Director of Professional Development
Graduating December 2018

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My personal goals are to make this a great semester for the BAP&AS family. I hope to help the members learn more about themselves and develop themselves personally. They are the future leaders of this organization, as well as the business world. I want to help them realize their vast potential.

Who is your favorite kid in Tau?
I love all of Tau. They each grew so much and left their mark on the organization and in my heart. I hear constantly about something a Tau did that makes me proud to have been their pops/papa. Sorry to my own Sigmas and other classes but Tau is the best ever! Sorry, y'all. That's just the way it is.  To Upsilon pledges, you all better step up; be better than Tau and all of classes that came before you. Bring your A game!
Sean Miranda
Treasurer
Graduating May 2019

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
One of my goals this semester is to improve on the role of Treasurer by providing more structure and policies to the financial portion of the organization. Other goals this semester include keeping up with my classes and maintaining good grades, being more involved with our Upsilon pledge class, and definitely enjoy another semester at CSULB.

What form of public transportation do you prefer? (air, boat, train, bus, car, etc.)
My preferred method of transportation is by car. My Prius and I have been through ups and downs in life. I also love driving by myself so I can have my favorite songs on repeat.
Vincent Nguyen
Associate Treasurer
Graduating December 2018

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?

What's your favorite zoo animal?
Penguins they just seem very derpy waddling around and just entertaining to watch. Now it randomly reminds me of the penguin gang from the movie Madagascar!

A Look Into the Upsilon Candidate Class

Get to know the future of Beta Alpha Psi and catch a glimpse into how the pledging process is going for the Upsilon Class so far.
Upsilon Candidate Class Meeting, February 1

The Upsilon Candidate Class of Spring 2018 saw a packed classroom for their first candidate meeting with 29 pledge candidates (27 of which have officially signed up to pledge), Beta Alpha Psi members, and most of the officer board.

Director of Records  John Garawan had members get into groups and find rare things they had in common with each other, then he spoke on the requirements for pledging. Brent Tuanquin (Sigma) and Vincent Nguyen (Tau) talked about their time as pledges and past pledge officers Adriana Ramos (President, Sigma) and Soojin Kim (Events Coordinator, Tau) spoke on their experiences being on the pledge board.
After other group activities, officer nominations began. Thirteen candidates got a chance to prepare their speeches, then presented them in front of their peers. The pledge class elected Diana Hoang as their Events Coordinator, Elivia Lucero as their Secretary, Morgan Ross as their Treasurer, Angel Romero as their Vice President, and Berenice Contreras as their President.

An Ode to Our Committees

Christian Castro
ABSOC
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My goals for the semester in academics are to make sure I am on top of my assigned readings so that I don't have to study late nights before an exam! Professionally, I hope to pick up a spring internship to better gain experience and knowledge about being in a tax position and with my position I hope to be as transparent and as approachable as possible as a representative of BAP towards other organizations at CBA and CSULB. We may be the largest org but that doesn't mean we can't learn from other organizations at the school.

Who knows you best?
I would say my girlfriend Esther because I'm not around my family as much anymore and she can just read my attitude or intentions without even having to hear me speak.

Jason Plourde
ABSOC
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My academic goals this semester is to maintain at least a 3.7 or higher for my overall GPA. Right now my accounting GPA is 3.6 and I am taking 300B so I know it will be challenging in maintaining it, but I am looking forward to the challenge. For BAP, I just want to help out the board and the committees I am in as much as possible. In particular, I would like to be an effective member for special events, they need as much help as they can and I am willing to provide it.

If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?
I would have to go with the wolf. Not in the lone wolf sense, but in being a pack animal. As I stated earlier I want to do my best in helping the org as much as possible and that means I have to be there for them when they need it.

Michael Reeve
Academic Development

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My personal goals are to continue to grow the Academic Development committee and help people throughout the org meet their goals.

What's the most interesting thing you can see out of your office or kitchen window?

Yzabel Balagtas

Do you usually follow your heart or your head?
Having an ISFJ personality (emphasis on the "feeling"), I follow my heart because I deeply value the relationships I have with the people that are in my life and want to make decisions that would not upset them. Jodette Abarquez
Mentor Program
Co-Coordinator

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My personal goals are to graduate and get good grades. I also purchased books about saving money and practicing on Microsoft Excel. As mentorship co-chair, I want the mentees to be comfortable with their mentors. For this program, I want the mentees to feel empowered by asking questions about accounting, firms, and the recruiting process.

What are you most thankful for?
My parents because they are very supportive and help me with my job opportunities.
Adriana Ramos
Mentor Program

What are your hobbies?
I like playing basketball, tennis, and watching sports. I also like going to the gym so I can stay fit and healthy.  I make GoPro videos in my spare time and upload them on youtube.  I just try to travel as much as I can because life is too short to stay in one place.
Virgil Manalo
Public Relations
Social Media Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
With my position as Social Media subcommittee chair, I would like to hopefully have a more social presence online, as well as have the ability to feature more members on our accounts so that other members and alumni get to better know who our members are.

Who's the most famous person you know?
The closest relative I have that comes anything close to being famous, would have to be my grandfather, who was almost the head of the health department of the Philippines but turned down the position.
Chase Rossi
Recruiting
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My goals are to use my knowledge and experience to help as many members as possible this semester. Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Garfield. There is not a better representation of my life than a fat cat eating lasagna.
Sunny Scarbrough
Recruiting
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
As Recruiting co-chair I want to make sure we reach all potential AS/BAP members. We prepared an engaging PowerPoint for room reps and have the best of the best for tabling in the courtyard. With the bright personalities in the recruiting committee, I have no doubt that we can increase spring recruiting!

What is your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories are pretty much all of our camping memories! We used to go camping almost every other weekend and I always loved hanging out with my family, exploring nature, and eating s'mores!
Cynthia Barajas
Resume

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My primary personal goal for this semester is to prioritize fitness in my life. I think that so far I've been able to manage school, work, and a personal life well. However, I've been a bit irresponsible about maintaining a consistent fitness regime. This semester I'm determined to stay healthy and motivated. In regards to BAP, I want to be able to build stronger relationships with the people I meet. I really would like to get to know who people are as people, not just know what they've done.

What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?
I've eaten an ant before when I was around 6 years old. My older brother double dared me to and I caved.
Sodenni Wang
Resume
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My goals for the semester include balance my classes, VITA, and being involved in multiple organizations. Within BAP&AS, I'd like to continue to make connections with all of our members in everything I do.

If you were ruler of your own country what would be the first law you would introduce?
The first law I would put into place would give me ownership of all the pandas...so, I'd very much like to rule China for a little bit since they own all the pandas in the world.
Connie Chan
Special Events
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
My personal goal is to get through this semester without being sick again because I wasted the entire winter break being sick and it sucks! Academically, I guess do well in my classes and get good grades? For BAP, I want to enjoy my experience in the Special Events Committee and meet more people. But I'll take it easy this semester.

Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?
I like good surprises as long as I'm not the center of attention in front of a bunch of random strangers! And bad surprises are... bad. (please don't prank me)
Elise Potts
Special Events
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
Maintaining my GPA and helping students as both an SI Leader and a tutor! Additionally, working with the Special Events committee to make sure everyone in BAP&AS has exciting events to attend throughout the semester.

What's the longest you've gone without sleep (and why)?
Somewhere between 36 to 48 hours while cramming for finals! Not a great study strategy, wouldn't recommend.
Giovanna Ulloa
Special Events
Co-Chair

What are your personal goals for this semester, academic, in BAP (with your position), or otherwise?
This being my last semester I want to enjoy it as much as I can while still staying involved. As co-chair for special events, I can continue to stay actively involved with the main events happening and still enjoy my last semester.

What's your favorite holiday?
I think my favorite holiday is Halloween, I love dressing up and scary movies.

Until next time!

But until then, find us on social media!
