Dear DC Bilingual Families,
I am writing today to share an important update about DC Bilingual’s reopening plan for the 2020-21 school year.
As you know, over the past several months we have worked hard to determine the best way to open the new school year. We have formed a ReOpen DCB working group of board members, parents, and staff; held numerous teacher working sessions; and attended countless meetings and webinars about appropriate school reopening practices while keeping in mind the local health guidance.
Given the continued impact of the coronavirus on our region, staff and family survey feedback on reopening DC Bilingual, and recommendations from the DC Bilingual academic working group, we have decided to begin the school year in a remote, virtual only model through at least the end of term 1. We know that on-campus, in-person education is optimal for the academic, social, and emotional development of our students. However, we cannot risk the health and safety of our community. If in term 2, we can shift our model to bring some or all students on campus safely, we will work to do that. Similarly, today the Mayor announced that DC Public Schools (DCPS) will be all virtual for term 1 this school year.
By making this decision now, we have the opportunity to hone in on the best learning practices we can offer to students virtually during the school day, as well as during after school time. At the end of the 2019-20 school year, we collected family feedback on our remote learning model launched with the Mayor’s stay-at-home orders due to COVID-19. We will use this survey data to improve our instructional model using the virtual classroom. As well, we will devote significant time during our August staff training to prepare our teachers and after school staff to use the technology and learning platforms our instructional leaders have selected for our students and families. In the coming weeks, we will update our website with more details including FAQs, DC Bilingual’s learning plan and priorities, staff and family survey results, and other resources to support students and families.
We are excited to work together to make 2020-21 a great school year, regardless of the pandemic. We invite you to attend one of four upcoming, virtual town hall sessions taking place on August 18th and 20th. At the sessions, school leaders will review DC Bilingual’s plans for term 1 of the 2020-21 school year as well as address any questions you may have. The meetings are language specific and will take place both in the late afternoon and evening. Please register here to receive login information.
Together, we are a strong and resilient community. Thank you for all you do to help DC Bilingual students learn and grow during this challenging time.
¡Juntos somos líderes!
