Hello DC Bilingual community,
Welcome back to school! We have missed you very much and are excited to see you again, and to meet our new families. In just over two weeks, we will begin the new school year together in the virtual model. We are so proud of all the hard work of our staff to create a rigorous, virtual learning plan in parallel with our return-to-campus plan. We have taken into account family feedback shared via the end-of-year survey and extensive consultation with educators across the city. DC Bilingual’s virtual learning plan provides all of us—students, teachers, and families—with a clear path for the start of a great school year.
Since the spring, we have updated learning platforms, planned for more small group offerings, and created clear, student-friendly instructions for families to support their students’ engagement while remote. Students typically spend all of their elementary years (PK3-5th) preparing to become independent with assignments and online content in 6th grade. Therefore, students, especially younger students, will require support from families to access virtual content. You can learn more about the ways you can support your child during this time at our upcoming Welcome Back Expo, described below.
As you plan for how to support your learner at home during term 1 of the 2020-21 school year, we ask that you review this Head of School message in full. Further, we invite you to attend one of the upcoming events in which we will answer your questions and talk in more detail about the opening weeks of school.
Next week, on August 18 and August 20, DC Bilingual will host a series of virtual town halls where leadership will discuss our plans for virtual learning and class schedules in detail. These town halls will also provide an opportunity for families to ask questions regarding learning plans and the beginning of the school year. Each session will cover the same topics. If you haven’t already, please RSVP HERE for the day/time that works best for your schedule/language. For those unable to attend, we will post recordings of the town halls to our website—one in English and one in Spanish.
Then, on Thursday, August 27 from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, we invite you to join us at our Welcome Back Expo. The expo will take place on the school’s outdoor blacktop and will be a perfect opportunity for you and your child to see teachers and school staff in a safe, festive setting. At the expo, we will provide families with all of the materials and information you need to have a successful term 1 virtual learning experience. Please review our expo flyer before coming to ensure a safe process for everyone.
