Join us at La Art-cada

We took a little artistic license with our title this month, but it certainly fits. Our gallery is situated in La Arcada and has a bounty of fabulous artwork from our very talented local artists. Please join us at Gallery 113 for our First Thursday reception, on October 3, from 5-8pm.  Meet our artist of the month, Emil Morhardt. Scroll down to read his bio and view a sample of his beautifully rendered bird paintings.

Our featured artists and group artists will also be there to meet and greet, so be sure to say hello as you enjoy the art and refreshments.

Our gallery is located at 1114 State Street in La Arcada Court. We're open Monday-Saturday from 11am-5pm and Sunday from 1-5pm.

We look forward to seeing you!

If you should have any questions please don't hesitate to email us at gallery113@frontier.com.

Artist of the Month - Emil Morhardt
Emil Morhardt is an artist based in Santa Barbara who expresses his passion for birds through his portfolio of lifelike acrylic paintings. He began his art career by painting landscapes of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Eastern Sierra. Today, he focuses his attention on painting portraits of Santa Barbara birds intended to give a sense of their inner lives as well as of their outer appearances. He bases his paintings on hundreds of photographs he takes of birds where they live. A single painting often uses information from several photos to get the features, behavior, and background. He writes:
“Lately I’ve been thinking about my long career as an ecologist and climate change scientist and the subtle ways it seems to be driving me to paint birds as a sort of antidote to the unrelenting onslaught of bad environmental news. My thoughts were amplified recently on a trip aboard the National Geographic Orion from Tahiti, through the Tuamotu Archipelago, to the Marquesas Islands. This is a lightly populated and largely undisturbed part of the watery world full of marine life. It felt good to celebrate what we have rather than bemoan what has been lost. On return I photographed hundreds of pelicans and thousands of dolphins right off Hope Ranch reminding me how wonderful Santa Barbara and environs continue to be.”
