SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
Mid-September 2020 - Gillian Gillian Interiors - Newsletter Trio Pinterest Images
I hope you all had a great Labour day weekend for those of us in Canada and the US. I cannot believe we are already in mid-September!

I feel like this newsletter is basically all about me; it's been a busy two weeks since I last wrote, and I have so much good stuff to share.
SOON TO LAUNCH
Heritage Throws, Gillian Gillies, photogpraphy Virginia Macdonald - 4
I am loving the cooler temps, having my windows open and wearing layers for the first time since June. Layers are my preferred way to go for both my closet and my home.

I have been wearing one of my new cashmere throws from my Heritage Throw collection and I love that it instantly makes me feel cozy, yet it's light enough to wear and also throw in my bag when not needed.

We are in the final throws (excuse the pun) with all the marketing but above are some snapshots of what they look like.

We had a great morning's shoot in Caledon a few weeks ago. It was a very hot day; I was wearing rubber wellies that were not my own and therefore did not quite fit properly (I almost lost one and my balance in the water….) and I was draped in lambswool and cashmere – in my mind I pretended it was a beautiful cool fall day! The things you do.
IN THE PRESS
House & Home Magazine, photography Gillian Gillies
We have a gorgeous home featured in this month's House & Home magazine. If you do not subscribe, please be sure to pick up the October issue which landed on newsstands at the weekend.

We had the pleasure of working on this home from September 2018 – July 2019. The renovation took six months on-site and we had just over three months upfront for the planning and the perfecting of the design selections.

The townhome is in a gorgeous leafy enclave in Rosedale and it was love at first sight for my clients.

I loved that the home, originally built in 1927, had such a lovely history. The townhomes were first built as starter homes for the newly married daughters of Rosedale families. The townhomes were of a size that they were manageable as a starter home plus they allowed the daughters to stay close to their parents. If you live in the city, you might know the neighbourhood.

My client's home had many of the original features such as the tall baseboards, plaster cornicing, and the lovely staircase newel posts, spindles, and handrails. All she needed was a bit of a modern-day facelift to let her shine.

The home is now so welcoming and warm – a perfect city home.  All the images are on our website and can be seen in the portfolio here.

I love a good before and after story too, so these are on our Instagram feed as a permanent story.

Here are some of the highlights –
Kitchen Rosedale Townhouse, Before and After, Gillian Gillies Interiors
The kitchen shows the story of how powerful paint is.

We kept the existing cabinets and the countertop as they were both fairly new and truthfully, the appliances were in the best spots.

We had all the millwork resprayed and replaced the backsplash. Adding strong lighting really defined the space and it looks so different from the all-white space we started with.

The countertops that my client did not really love at the beginning now look so gorgeous paired with darker tones.
Den Rosedale Townhouse, Before and After, Gillian Gillies Interiors
The den is a compact space and it's in the same room as the kitchen.

My client's wish-list included comfortable seating for four, good lighting, a TV, and a built-in bar. We gave them exactly what they asked for.

I love the play of pattern and colour in this diminutive space. It layers so well together and pairs beautifully with the kitchen.
Principal Bedroom Before and After Gillian Gillian Interiors - 12 and 13
The principal bedroom was a great size but really lacked storage as you can see above.

We replaced the original closets with custom millwork that also included a rad cover with a built-in drawer. We mirrored the closet design on the opposite wall and added a colourful upholstered bench!

The wallpaper was a topic of discussion with my clients for a few months, I am so glad for their trust as it looks

WHAT WE'RE LEARNING
We are still patiently waiting for the Globe and Mail feature on our barrier-free washroom……… but in the meantime, I have now completed my
Certified Living In Place Professional training (CLIPP). This means, that I am now certified (not certifiable) in making smarter choices and decisions to help people stay longer in their homes.

The training was not about ageing in place, it truly is about living in place. So much of what was taught is just simply smart so I will be suggesting a lot of what I learned to my clients.

It was a three-day course on Zoom with a group of 10 people. There were health professionals, designers, and contractors all bringing and sharing different knowledge with each other.

Truthfully, there was a distinct lack of beauty in any of the slides or course material (which made for a very long three days for me), and whilst I understand function only all too well, I do feel very strongly that over 60% of what was taught could be tastefully implemented as simply good design.

Beauty should not merely be an afterthought or only for those who are young and in their prime of health and fitness. Beauty feeds our soul and makes us feel better, and that should simply be available to us all!!

Thank you, as always, for your continued reading and support.
