Small Parts Vice

Holding odd-shaped parts in a standard woodworking vice can be difficult. But spending the money on a dedicated carver’s vice wasn’t an option. Instead, I built this adjustable stand for an “F-style” bar clamp to serve as my carver’s vice.

PLYWOOD CONSTRUCTION. With the exception of the cleat that attaches to the base, the rest of the clamp stand parts are made from plywood. A stepped slot cut in the base (detail ‘b’) allows the clamp arm to pivot. This is handy for repositioning your workpiece without having to move the entire stand. A knob and coachbolt lock the clamp arm to the base.

Each clamp bracket is made from two interlocking pieces as shown in detail ‘a.’ They’re screwed to the clamp arm. The opening in the bracket is sized to fit your clamp. A simple clamp stop keeps the bar clamp from shifting while in use. I screwed it to the clamp arm after the bar clamp is placed in the brackets.

SAFETY IN THE WORKSHOP Safety devices, such as riving knives, guards on table saws and guards over router bits have been deliberately left out of the line drawings in Australian Woodsmith projects in order to make them easier to follow. It goes without saying that where safety devices have been supplied by the manufacturers you should use them. We encourage the use of push sticks as good work practice.
Exercise vigilance and the greatest of care when using power tools, whether stationary or portable. Keep all your tools sharp and well maintained. Wear protective eyewear, a dust mask and a hearing protector when appropriate. By limiting distractions and developing safe work practices you will go a long way to avoiding workshop accidents. So, work safe fellow woodworkers.  -Editor
