Adjustable Bench Dogs

The woodworking vice on my workbench doesn’t have a quick-release feature. This can make it a little slow to adjust. To speed up the process when securing a workpiece using bench dogs, I came up with the simple accessory shown above. It allows me to hold a workpiece between it and a unique bench dog inserted in the vice with a minimal amount of adjustment.

Quick build. This easy-to-adjust bench dog is nothing more than a square piece of plywood with a dowel inserted in a hole in the face of the piece. The key to the bench dog’s adjustability is that the dowel is placed in an offset position from centre. This way, by simply rotating it in the dog hole from one edge to the next, the distance from the workpiece changes as well (100, 75, 50 and 25mm). This reduces the number of turns of the vice handle needed to secure the piece.

SAFETY IN THE WORKSHOP Safety devices, such as riving knives, guards on table saws and guards over router bits have been deliberately left out of the line drawings in Australian Woodsmith projects in order to make them easier to follow. It goes without saying that where safety devices have been supplied by the manufacturers you should use them. We encourage the use of push sticks as good work practice.
Exercise vigilance and the greatest of care when using power tools, whether stationary or portable. Keep all your tools sharp and well maintained. Wear protective eyewear, a dust mask and a hearing protector when appropriate. By limiting distractions and developing safe work practices you will go a long way to avoiding workshop accidents. So, work safe fellow woodworkers.  -Editor
