The brown rat (Rattus Norvegicus) has only two types of teeth: molars and incisors. They have four of the latter, which are used to gnaw through wood, cardboard, flesh, and so on. The incisors have no roots and therefore never stop growing. The rat’s incessant gnawing is not simply a compulsion; it is a necessity of life. If the brown rat stops its beveling, its own teeth will grow through its palate, through its brain and through its skull. The animal must chew everythingin its path, or it will die.

Saulaman Schlegel (Homo Sapien) has four types of teeth and 26 inside his head. He consumes the world through paint, acrylic, chalk, macramé, hip hop, photography, new wave, installation, mixology, juggling, cooking, gnawing, sarcasm, etc. Through his work you might glimpse the man himself (better than average hair, having a better than average time). But, with the right kind of eye, you may also bear witness to the very pilings of existence and what it is to live on this rat’s nest earth.

Saulaman attended Grand View University, where he received a Bachelor's degree in the Studio Arts, with a concentration in Creative writing. He currently resides in Des Moines, Iowa, where he works as an artist, musician, poet, and mentor with the non-profit; ArtForceIowa.
