Wealden Business Group swings in favour of 'BREXIT'

Wealden Business Group debated the forthcoming European Union referendum at its breakfast meeting on Wednesday, 16th March.

The straw poll taken at the meeting showed nine members in favour of leaving the EU, eight in favour of staying, and three undecided - a stark change from the survey conducted among members last June, when 80 percent voted for continued membership.

Arguments for exit included the primacy of the UK Parliament over EU legislation; that the EU's expansion to 28 members meant 'one size fits all' policies' no longer work; and that it would remain in Europe's interests to continue do business with UK companies.

Those favouring continued membership felt it was important for the UK to have a 'voice' in Europe; that EU migrants were essential to keep some agricultural businesses afloat, such as fruit picking; and there were too many uncertainties to be clear about what life would be like outside of the EU.

All members agreed that people required more, unbiased information before making their choice at the referendum on 23rd June.

BUDGET - SOME GOOD NEWS FOR SME OWNERS

The recent Budget contained some good news for small business owners.

Highlighting the key points, David Meredith, senior partner at Busbys chartered accountants, said business rates relief for small business owners had  been expanded and made permanent; some of the restrictions on Entrepreneurs' Relief recently introduced have been relaxed; and £1,000 allowances introduced for trading profits and rental income will mean some people will not need to declare this income.
