A Look Back at Summer 2020
Although we were unable to open for traditional, overnight Summer Camp this year, our staff, campers, and families still had a summer filled with amazing memories.
Combined, Camp at Home, Family Retreats, and staff work projects created another unforgettable summer of outdoor ministry at Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp & Retreat Center. As beautifully stated by our summer staff in their Unity Covenant, “We are joining a camp family that goes back generations. We recognize the importance and impact of Caroline Furnace’s mission on the generations that have come through this place. We realize this mission holds even more importance and weight in our current environment. “
As we wrap up another unforgettable (and quite unusual) summer, we continue to prepare for WHEN we are able to resume Summer Camp in Fort Valley once again. Our hope rests in the goodness of our God and the power of the overnight summer camp experience.
Stay tuned - more details on Summer 2021 will be released on September 15!
Virtual Faith Education - Leader Resources
This summer, we had so much fun and learned A LOT about leading groups online during Camp at Home. Camp at Home was an online summer camp option that we offered at no cost, both to continue interacting with campers from the safety of their homes this summer, and to provide a free resource for parents.
Learn more about leading online faith education at the link below - view our notes, terms and conditions, and a recorded Zoom demonstration of some of our favorite games.

We are urging state representatives to provide financial support for our industry, so that we may continue to serve children and families (and YOU!) across the Commonwealth in 2021 and beyond.
1. We are the only small business industry unable to operate in all three phases of the Forward Virginia reopening guidelines.
2. Our industry is seasonal. Most of yearly revenue is earned during the summer months.
3. Family programs and virtual options are a meager stop-gap that will not come close to covering 2020 losses in the operating budget.
4. The eligibility criteria for the Paycheck Protection Program loan was set at a disadvantage to seasonal employers and resulted in reduced funding for Virginia camps.
5. Many of our Virginia camps may not survive to see the next summer season. Any survivors will most likely fail if a vaccine is unavailable before Summer 2021.
Over 75 summer camps have been encouraged to contact their state representatives in support as they prepare for the August session. Add your voice as a camper, parent, counselor, staff, and/or alumni using the form letter and petition below.
Thank you for your continued support of Virginia's Summer Camps!

Pre-Advent Retreat (online)
September 22 & 23, 9:00 to 11:30am
Our Pre-Advent Retreat is now online! Join us on Zoom for pericope study of the Gospel texts for Advent. We'll read a contemporary commentary on the text and then discuss. We will also discuss how to creatively worship this Advent in light of COVID-19.
Pastors and lay leaders are encouraged to participate. All are welcome!
Save the Date: The Pre-Lenten Retreat will be online as well, on January 19-21.
Outdoor Worship Series
Join us for outdoor worship this Sunday, August 16!
Aug 16, Sept 20, Oct 18
All are welcome to join us for an ecumenical outdoor worship series at St. John's Chapel! Worship will be on each third Sunday at 6:30pm, rain or shine. The Spring Field will be open by 6pm. Bring your own lawn chairs, picnic blankets, snacks, and musical instruments. Bulletins and/or a projector screen will be available. Social distancing is expected among separate households.
We're working hard to prepare for our fall retreat groups and have really enjoyed hosting single-household family retreats on-site this summer! We are adapting to new needs related to COVID-19 in many ways. Here are a few key highlights:
Guests/participants are expected to keep a daily temperature and symptom log for the 14 days prior to arrival for a retreat.
Retreat bookings are spaced so that facilities can 'rest' for 72 hours before being cleaned and sanitized for the next group, based on research showing the limited viability of this specific virus.
We're adjusting retreat sizes and spaces as needed, to allow groups to better spread out.
Sleeping arrangements allow for 6+ feet of spacing between individuals.

Linked below is a calendar showing group retreat availability for the rest of the year. We recognize that our communities will be especially in need of time together on retreat as soon as it is safe to do so. Book soon - we want to be sure that we have space for you! We look forward to seeing you soon!
