By the end of 2016, almost 2,500 patients will have accessed MPA programs and almost 500 learners will have been trained in innovative models of integrated health care. With more than 30 MPA initiatives currently in progress, we continually strive to show measurable impact for a growing number of patients with co-existing mental and physical health needs.

Using innovative technology to increase access to mental health care

In the past year, the telepsychiatry program at CAMH worked with 225 communities throughout Ontario, primarily through linkages with local primary care providers.  Within the mandate of the MPA, the telepsychiatry program is partnering with Family Health Teams to increase access to mental health care across Ontario.

Strengthening integrated care

2015-2016 MPA Annual Report

More than 2,000 patients were seen in MPA-related programs in the past year, with more than 50 health-care professionals working hard to fulfill the MPA mandate of improving the quality of life and increasing the life expectancy of patients affected by both mental and physical illnesses. New philanthropic support for MPA

The Ciro & Caterina Gucciardi Charitable Foundation has generously committed $500,000 to support the MPA's Child and Youth Demonstration Projects at SickKids, with a particular focus on patients with autism and complex medical needs.

CLIMB program provides kids holistic care for their minds and hearts

The first of its kind in Canada, MPA's Children’s Integrated Mood and Body (CLIMB) program at SickKids provides comprehensive mental health care for paediatric depression, while also screening for risk factors that may result in serious heart and related health problems as the patient grows up.

A new pilot program at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga aims to improve the quality of care and life for young diabetes patients who are at increased risk for depression.

MP3C launched fall 2016

The MPA introduced the first three modules of the Medical Psychiatry Collaborative Care Certificate (MP3C) starting September 2016. A continuing education program to support learning in integrated mental and physical collaborative health care, these modules are open to all interested healthcare providers, managers and administrators who are working with patients living with co-existing mental and physical needs.

Dec. 19, 2016

Through a new approach to the education of health professionals, the MPA is offering opportunities for fellowship programs in the 2017/18 academic year that fosters innovation, integration and leadership at the interface between mental and physical health. Deadline is Dec. 19, 2016 for a July 2017 start date.

Picking up the PACE

Drs. Valerie Taylor and Peter Selby were recently awarded a grant of over $700,000 from the Public Health Agency of Canada, called "Picking up the PACE" (Promoting and Accelerating Change through Empowerment). The work will expand tobacco cessation training and curriculum to promote integrated chronic disease prevention. Drs. Taylor and Selby are collaborating together on the MPA Brain-Heart Initiative.

Collaborative Education Innovation Project

The Medical Psychiatry (MP) MD Program at U of T recently issued a call for Collaborative Education Innovation Project (CEIP) proposals that will advance integrated physical and mental health in the MD Program in an innovative way.  Successful projects will be funded up to $40,000 for a period of 1 year per project. Successful applicants will be notified in mid-December 2016 and invited to proceed with the next phase of the application process.
