We are delighted to be able to send you the first URIS newsletter. The initiative "Ukrainian Research in Switzerland" promotes the national and international networks of scholarly Ukraine-related projects at Swiss universities. The URIS website now presents a list of ongoing and recently completed Swiss Ukraine research projects in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences. We invite you to take a look for an overview. Please also note the page with links to interesting Ukraine-related journals, library catalogues, associations, etc.

We would also like to draw your attention to our News section. Information on events, new projects, teaching programmes and publications of relevance to the subject of “Ukrainian Research in Switzerland” will be published on A selection of these will also be included in the newsletter, which will be sent out 3-4 times per year. We hope that many of you will use this resource and either send any relevant information to us at or post it directly in our Facebook group.

We are delighted that the call for applications for the first URIS fellowship at the University of Basel met with such an enthusiastic response. More than 30 qualified applications were submitted and the selection process is now in the final phase. We are very pleased with this success and will soon introduce the first URIS fellow in this newsletter. The fellow will teach at the University of Basel in the 2017 spring semester and take part in URIS activities throughout Switzerland.


  • … for your calendar: An initial URIS workshop will take place in Basel in April 2017 as a kick-off event for the network. Further information to follow.
  • … good news from SNSF: A number of new projects have recently been approved by the Swiss National Science Foundation, including a DOC.CH scholarship for Fabian Baumann (Basel), an Advanced Postdoc.Mobility scholarship for Stephan Rindlisbacher (Bern) and a large-scale project directed by Prof. Amacher at the University of Geneva.
